The larger V-6 filter from the 626 series is a direct replacement, and gives better flow and filtering than the original thimble sized filter. FWIW...I just checked my old filter junkpile, and I'm still voting for the Wix 51356. My Tenex(?)-manufactured Mazda filter has lots of filter material (101 sq. in.) for it's size, but had "flash" on the edges of the inlet holes where the metal is punched out, and this kept the floppy antidrainback valve from sealing properly. Result; occasional start-up rattles
from a completely drained filter. The Wix has larger cleanly made inlet holes, 93 sq. in. of equal or better filter media, a better antidrainback valve, and has a better center tube design for better flow of filtered oil. Nothing but plusses to me. Cost is the same (less than $6).
