Fog Lights without Head Lights

:
none
I've seen a few posts in the past about peeps wanting to know how to do this. I just did it today, it's very easy. This will probably not work on cars that have daytime running lights.

First get down by the brake and look straight up. You'll see the fog light relay switch. It's a black relay plugged into a clear plastic harness. If your not sure which one it is, just turn your fogs on and off, and you will hear it click.

Then cut the red wire coming out of the harness. Make sure you leave plenty of wire going into the relay, you will have to connect a wire to that later. Tape off the red wire that's not connected to the harness, were done with that.

Next, take out the plastic cover that's on the very left side of the dash. The one that you can only see when you open the door. It's immediately to the left of the fog switch. There are four push tabs holding it in. Just pop those tabs out and then it will pull right out. You will see a wire harness plugged into the fog light switch. You will need to tap into the black/green wire. Don't cut it, just splice into it. Then connect a spare wire from that black/green wire back down to the red wire going into the relay switch that you cut earlier. That's it. Took me about 15 minutes.

Hey swimmer, I gave you some stars for that how-to. I've been wanting to do this but I wasn't sure how. It sounds pretty easy. People should rate others more when they write out how-to's like this. So everyone out there, if someone gives an easy to follow ho-to guide, give them a good rating. :D

STARS!!! Thanks Ben!
3pmadzam: I'm not a 100% sure on that, but my guess is that it will work on all Protege's without Day Time Running Lights.
Actually my brother helped me out on this, he got out the ol' volt meter out and started checking wires. Once he figured out which wires were connected to the fogs, the head lights, and the driving lights, it was easy from there. He used to design and build Indy Cars for a living, so he knows a thing or two about cars. Actually, he wants to build a custom made header for my car, but that's another post.

TightMP3: Yes they do go off when you turn your brights on. Just like they always have. Really nothing changes on this setup, except for the fact that you can turn the fogs on with either the driving lights or the head lights on. Where before you HAD to have the head lights on.

Swim, brotha, I wasn't the one asking about if it would work on all mazdas...no big though :D

What's the other piece of stereo equipment you got in your dash? I've been wanting to stick something else in there

i am new to the site i have a yellow mp3 in north carolina and wanted to figure oput how to do this to my lights and hey what u said works thanks alot man

yeah thanks alot i just finished doing it, it works and it was easy two. the only hard part was squeezing my ass under the dash hahah.

Hey Newf. That's a Pioneer DEQ-7200 Specrum Analyzer. I have it hooked up to an Alpine MRP-F200 amp in the trunk pushing the four stock Kenwood Speakers. It really makes the mids and highs sound a lot better, and it looks great with all the moving lights on the dash :) I'm still using the stock Kenwood Sub, but that's about to go next.

I was considering putting an EQ/spectrum in mine as well. But with the z828, it's already got one.....can it be done?

hmmmmmm

I word of caution. You can blow the fuse, I sure did. It control the buzz sound, that tells u that your lights r on, and the park lights. I did have head lights though, but nothing else. And guess what, no spares. Can you believe that. When did they start doing that. Guess what the dealer guy told me when I asked why, "They don't put them in there no more because they get rusty", yah sure. If they are stored right they won't.

If you want to know which one it is. Don't look in the CAR MANUEL it will not tell u. It should be the one (blue 15 fuse) right next to the only 7.5 (brown coloured) fuse in the engine fuse box.

wait, so to do this, do I first need an extra piece of wire to connect the black/green wire back to the connector?
