First Oil change

I think this dealer owes you another free oil change ASAP. I'd probably watch to make sure they used a proper oil like Motor-Craft 5w30 Blend from quart bottles. You may find that it needs only 5 & 1/2 quarts to reach the full line and NOT 6 quarts. JMTs Ed

I just changed mine for the 1st time at 2k, that stuff looked so black and oxidized, it was much worse than my previous car or my wife's Vibe at 5-6k oil intervals. I always run Mobil 1 synthetic.

Black factory fill could very well be an assembly lub or oil additive like Moly to assist in the breakin.

In regard to oil weight issue, we got home from colo trip saturday. I went to dealer this morning and spoke to them about the oil issue I am having. Well, they must be totally incompetent. The service writer said all the vehicles (mazdas) use 5w-20. So I showed him my owner's manual and he stated that he was not aware that any engines required 5w-30. He said that 5w-20 is the only oil that was required as far as he knew and stated the 5w-30 would probably be needed in high heat environments like AZ and NM. So I mentioned to him that we just got back from NM. And if he doesn't think Texas is hot, he needs to stay around a little longer. Try like 30+ days over 100 degrees during the summer.

So he got on Mazda's service website and sure enough, found some bulletins about oil types. He figured out that the non-turbo 2.3 requires 5w-20 but there is a service bulletin that states that the turbo engines require 5w-30. He said he was going to figure this out so we marched over to parts/service department, he showed the guy the bulletin print-out. Well, the parts/service manager said all they use is Valvoline All Climate 5w-20. Then this guy stated that he may need to order in some 5w-30. He said they have been using 5w-20 in all vehicles including the turbos. One of the guys also stated that he thought all 5w-20 oils were syn blends!

I know there isn't much difference between the two oil weights, but it is quite hot down here year-round. And, I just wanted to prove to these idiots that they dont know their vehicles. Anyway, they didn't have the right oil in stock and didn't even offer to change it. So I mentioned that I will probably buy my own oil and stop by for a change.

Same thing at my dealer so he had to got to another dealer to get MC 5w30 blend for my oil change. Really disgusting that they think so little of their responsibilities. They won't take 30 minutes to read up on the manufactures recommendations for the cars they service but they will BS for hours at the coffee machine. I had to show the service writer that a 5w30 blend or full synthetic is approved by Mazda. He had be telling all including me that a synthetic was a no no in a CX7. End of rant but, it is frustrating to pay $80-100 dollars shop time for this kind of advice.

I am new here, but not new to forums. We just purchased a cx-7 on 8/31. i am a subaru guy at heart, but i love this mazda. I say if you really love your vehicle, change your own oil, then theres no doubt it will be done right. I changed my 05 subaru lgt over to full synthetic,(amsoil 5w-30) at 2,000 miles and have never had an issue at all with oil consumption even at stage 2+ power levels.5w-30 is a good weight for a turbo, even 10w-30 is fine too. nice to find a new forum, i look forward to learning as i am sure this is gonna be a little different from my subaru.(naughty)

Seems kinda hard to mess up an oil change if you got any common sense, no offense to anyone, just hate to give away money for something as simple as an oil change, especially if the dealerships dont even know what weight oil to use in a vehicle they sell and service

The dealerships that I go to KNOW what they are doing, and I make sure of this before hand, and they're no problems when warranty issues come up like "when did the oil get changed, do you have receipts, or you messed this up because you did not do this right" etc.., and I'm not a big fan of oil. It's a small price to pay IMO to not have to worry about documentation, where to take the used oil, getting oil all over, plus I live in an apartment complex and there is no place to do it at, unless I use someones driveway/garage. I have enough sense to know that I'm not the kind of person to be under a car.
