Racer 5

Just a question ... I am looking at cat-backs for my P5. Bosal, Mazdaspeed and Racing Beat. What do you guys think would be most benificial? Sound better (not whinny and tinny like a Briggs and Stratton on crack), give the most gains, look nicest ( I seen the Bosal that dosen't quite fit in the cut out on the bumper???) Thanks for any input.

im also in the market for a new exhaust. so far i havnt found any catbacks that i remotely like the looks of. i think the bosal looks like something somebody made in their garage. right now im probably just going to end up settling on a muffler with a tip instead of a full catback. and then when/if i get a job, and consider a turbo, i might look into full catback.

at first I hated the bosal exhaust but if combined with the Injen CAI dyno tested gave a 15 HP increase,

just to give you all some more ideas you can custom catbacks with your own after market exhaust can......... ie. i got a dtm dual tip exhaust can and went to a well know place that speicalizes in catbacks and got the pipe layed and bent to the exact measurements and installed on my car for a very low price of $90....and it sounds great........ plus if an exhaust system is to loud you can always get the silencers for them........... so think about it......and with my ehaust the tips angle up so the cover the cut out just to let you know .........it looks pretty cool if you ask me but then again thats me..........so you make your own decision.........

Justin,
Do you have pics of the exhaust installed? I'd like to see the upward angle dual tips. Post them here or mail them to me @ Mntfsc@aol.com. thanks. BTW, I knkow what you mean about doing a custom job for cheaper than what you will pay Bosal, Mazdaspeed, etc. for one. However, these companies R&D dept.'s should have a good grasp on what geometrical dimensions will perform best with certain types of motors. However, the increase you get from exhaust upgrades is minimal, so I don't think it will matter much.
Also, mazdaspeed19, you have the injen and the bosal?? You had it dynoed?? Just wondering, can't really decipher from the post if you meant you had it, or that you read it somewhere. Let me know, thanks. If you do have it, and it bumped up your HP that much, I think it would be a good investment for both? No? Just wondering if Mazdaspeed or Racing Beat's would be better since they are OEM and they worked on the MP3 project, respectively. Thjanks for your feedback.

I DONT HAVE PICTURES OF THE BACK OF MY CAR BECAUSE IT GOT HIT BY A HIT AND RUN SO ITS KINDA UGLY IN THE BACK NOW..........BUT WHEN I GET IT FIXED I WILL LET YOU KNOW..... ANY PICS I GET OF MY CAR I POST ON MY CAR CLUB PAGE OR IN MY PICTURE ALBUM AT WWW.ATRIMPORTS.COM OR WWW.PICTURETRAIL.COM/4DRMP5ATR SO CHECK IT... I JUST BARLEY GOT IT ON..........

if you want a bad ass cat back, check out skunk2 at lightningmotorsports.com. Its a little expensive ($540) but I guarantee you it will sound good. I have a borla boomer muffler and tip, and there is very little difference from stock sound and performance. I wouldnt even waste my money on bosal or racing beat.

Skunk2 has a full catback exhaust for the 2002 Protege 5. I've heard that its loud as hell. Bit pricey though, dealer cost is 615

You can get silencers for any mufflers? I really wanted those dual-tipped mufflers too, but my friend had one on his Civic and it was loud as hell so I didn't get it, but if there are silencers.. then that's different. Got a link to them?

sorry no link as to where to pick up the silencers but i bleieve if there are any motorsport shops around you go there and ask them they should be able to help you

I'm ordering the skunk2 exhaust this week..ill have pics up soon after install..

NO WAY I just got my Bosal P5 exhaust and it is quality. It sounds great and the muffler is perfectly aligned with the bumper. I wil post pictures within two days for proof! I didn't make any modification whatsoever(ie welding). It was a perfect bolt on system

well melicha if anyone has to do welding to a designed catback system then theres a problem with that because most and every company that comes out wit catbacks the bolt straight on with out any form of welding............unless your trying to redirect it to come out somer where else other than directed

Yeah, i feel ya on the way the cat-backs have looked. I installed a ractive muffler 3 days after i got mine. I think i works well with the Injen intake which gives the car a great sound. Also its not a bad idea to customize your own. Happy hunting. :D
