Engine tuning questions

yeah, that EGR tube was another thing not even mentioned in the instructions. Someone had told me that I could just put a filter on the end of it and leave it. Plus the other o2 sensor is hooked up, but it's just hanging there. If I want to put that into the manifold i'll have to drill and tap it out, the primary is hooked up however. As for the injectors there are 4 brown wires that go to them, none of them labeled and of course 4 wires from the injectors not labeled either so I have one from each of the injector plugs grounded and the other 2 hooked to the brown wires. Does that sound right? This project is beginning to be more trouble then it's worth. Also, I am guessing this is sort of like any other valve, but does the blow off screw have to be turned clockwise or counter clockwise to increase boost?
1) you might want to have that o2 sensor hooked up.. that might be my best guess as to your problem, but maybe not, but i think it might be.
2) the BOV does not control boost

Forgot a couple of things...... Brian have you run the 1/4 with that beast yet? Just curious what times you were getting with what psi. To the gentleman asking about the radiator, yes there is plenty of clearance, even though with the angle of the pic it doesn't look like it.

Matthew, yeah I thought maybe it wasn't getting enough fuel. I'm not really sure to be honest. There are some things on the ICU that I need to check and make sure they are set correctly....... also not explained in the instructions..... check out this pic of Noah, I'm thinking of letting him alone with the car for a few hours. lol

Wow, didn't even see that! Good find. That needs to be plugged or better yet, plumbed into the piping before the turbo (that will prevent a CEL and still allow it to "function").
The nice thing about taking 6 months to build a turbo kit is that you have 6 months to fumble around under the hood until...Bam...Where the **** am I going to hook this thing up??

(silly)

Go Check out the Domain Page if you like. Your questions are answered there

i plugged mine off and got a CEL "EGR flow insuffiecient" though it hasnt really seemed to affect anything on my car...some people redirected theirs into their crank case (the piece that sticks out by the valve cover and normally plugs into the intake)...there really hasnt been a deciding vote on what should or shouldnt be done. some people just left it open like you have it.

so to answer your question - i dont know. and for that matter i dont think anyone does, or we would have a definative answer. this has been debated many times. we need to find someone that is really knowledgable and ask them.

never heard of them is it made for the protege or is it a custom job by a company named TSI?

The injectors I wasn't to sure about, a site that I had found had said that one wire from each just had to go to ground and the others weren't supposed to go anywhere... which seemed a bit odd to me, maybe that's the whole problem. None of the injector wires are labeled or the ones from the brain box.
That your problem.. one wire needs to go to the xtra injector controller and the other needs to go to constant power.

So, methodical, are you saying the kit isn't a direct bolton? Does everything fit and there is poor instructions? Or did you have to make modifications as well? Any pics, hints on the install?

Chris

Chris, I could give you a bunch of hints on it, i've just been through all hell with it. The directions are just an overall installation, most of the pics are showing honda on the valve cover.....well it ain't a honda is it? No not all the pieces are bolt on. Actually the mods I had to do were 1 the oil return from the turbo to the oil pan was to short, not a big deal, but still costs extra money, time and irritation. The piping didn't fit exactly right, luckily I had an extra piece of piping that they sent, that was wrong so I hacksawed off two pieces to complete the routing to the intercooler. The directions give no indication of how to mount the intercooler for this particular car, I had to actually cut part of the lower grill so that it would bolt up. What my main complaint about this kit is basically the instructions, you can't just sell a kit for 2700.00 and no come with instructions that are for that car. I'm sure there are many people out there who know much more then me about cars and are probably much more able to hangle a project such as this, however I have a friend that has been a mechanic for 17 years and is ASE certified out the ass and a lot of the stuff didn't make sense to him either. I probably spent an extra 100.00 on the extra parts that I had to buy to get the kit right. They never did send the air intake, I had to use my old one. The directions for the ICU are out of order, page 3 should be page 2 and so forth. There is no explanation as to where the wires are located in the car, to hook up the brain box, if I had not of found this site, i'd probably still be stuck on that, so thanks to all who have suffered through and put your info out there. If anyone else has a TSI kit they need help with, i'll try my best to help you out.

if it makes you feel better i had similar problems with my install, since there are no true step by step instructions with the spool kit since they are out of business. the pictures are ok but yet show most of the parts installed and i had questions on what the pictures shoudl look like stock so i knew what to remove, etc etc.

it is normal however to have to cut the front of the car up for the IC piping. but then i had to re-fab the FMIC mounts due to the fact that the person that had the kit before me decided to removed the whole ******* bumper support when that is totally and completely unecessary. simply extend the support bars and dremmel some of the inside bumper away (im talking a minor amount on the left side because the FMIC sits slightly but barely noticably cockeyed out on the left side due to the power steering loop). five minutes worth of work tops, but the directions said to remove the bumper support. then we have the fact that the directions said to plug up the EGR valve with the jb weld and when i got a CEL a lot of people were like WTF did you do that for (hand).

then my FMU was bad so i had the kit all hooked up and was stressed the **** out for days because i couldnt boost over 4-5psi and when i did it was lean as hell. fortunately thats when Beau from Mental Addiction came to my rescue with some kick ass parts and killer deals which eventually lead to our partnership/sponsorship and what i think is becoming a good friendship.

anyhow, the whole process was a great learning experience and im sure youll feel the same way afterwards :) though i never had to hack any piping lol.

if i didnt have Mike (ghostp5) as a good friend throughout the install, i would have been lost. he guided me through a lot of s*** and saved me from possibly getting hurt in an accident without the bumper support, and many other things.

I did the valve cover thing originally I think, but I don't recommend that. What you need to do is to hook up a line from the EGR to your intake piping before the turbo. I moved mine, works better, no CEL and I'm not adding "pressure" to the valve cover like I was before. So no smoking for those that had issues with the first way I did this.

OK, I got a really funny story... this guy here is trying to give me advise. What's funny is that he thinks he knows everything about them, the best part is, he had a Geo Tracker... that's right a POS and SAYS he had a T30 on it and was running 30 psi. Now keep in mind the motor lasted for about a month or a month and a half. I just don't think I could believe that unless I say it for myself... oh yeah..... all stock internals with this also.... keeping in mind, this guy wants to give me advise.... ummm yeah.
