Engine clicking

I used to get the sound too, only under load in gear, but never at a stop.

To be safe and sure it wasnt because of low or Bad oil, I did a change and the sound was still there, then I installed the 4 - 1 headers that did 2 things. 1 it added a header gasket, and 2 it removed the heat sheild from under the car.

I havnt heard it since then

I've got a Thunder header on the way thanks to Protephile's GB so maybe my little rattle will go away!

I hope so, Im not quite sure what was causing it, it was annoying as Hell.

the stock gasket on the exhaust manifold is a joke its just Couple of thin peices of steel, and I mean thin especially compared to the gasket I got with the Tsudo headers.

I left them there BTW and just put the gasket that came with the headers right over it.

The sound came only under load in gear never at a stop, so Im geussing it has to do with the heat sheild, a good way to test would be to remove it (You have to anyways when you install the headers) this should be a good way to test if its the heat sheild.

Give it a shot remove the heat sheild (3 bolts 5min) see if it goes away.

I'll probably go out and do that right now. You just unplug the O2 sensor to get the heat shield around it, right? Otherwise it's just the 3 10mm bolts at the top. Thanks.

Exactly.

My o2 sensor the clips were snapped on a little mount, they came out of that with a little bit of working it it should be the Black one not the grey, it also takes a little work to unclip it, but it comes out. (But you should be able to tell what one goes under the car) Then 3 bolts and your done.

There is also a little plastic tie wrap arround the 2 o2 sensors cables, just cut that.

Be carefull though the sheild has SHARP edges, Me and my bud still have wounds from it.

I had the obx header when mine was making the sound, did it when I put everything back to stock too. Both dealerships I went to said it was normal. weird

There is normal engine noise and normal tranny squeel that is annoying but not an issue, & then there is the odd sound people get under load at certain engine speeds.

Maybe the sound your hearing is "normal" engine noises and not actually the issue in discussion. It would be easy to confuse them if you never actually experience the issue at hand.

However I could be wrong and you do in fact have the same issue.

Another suspect I have is the spring bolts connecting the headers to the mid pipe, I cranked the crap out of them when re-installing the headers.

I drove arround some more trying to induce the sound but couldnt, when I use to be able to make it at will.

my p5 makes the rattling sound everytime the rpm hits about 4300+ my friend said it might be a loose exhaust bracket, but im not sure. its not a cool sound tho, if i can find a way to record it ill upload it

Mine definately did not do it before I got in an accident with it, and the bodyshop ran the car for a 1\4 tank with very little oil in the car. At the time of the accident oil was comming out pretty badly and when I asked them if they had checked the oil they said there was no leaks when it got there.... anyways the noise im talkin about sounds like a metallic clacking sound in 2 and 3 at 3K- about 5k. It was definately coming from the engine. Wasnt the typical noisy injectors either.

There is a handful of people who have had damn near exactly the same sound at the same RPMS that I had, who ended up having to replace the shortblock, some were covered under warranty and others definately werent. Cause of it was determined to be oil starvation, not so much running low on oil but cornering hard and accelerating, casuing the oil to slosh to a side and the oil pickup not being able to pick any up. One guy was on his third engine but he auto'xed alot. Mine was due to low oil as well, and while I could have gone after the body shop for that damage, I just opted to go through the dealership, but they kept giving me a runaround.

First dealership I went to swore up and down it was normal, then the next said the sound was normal but louder than average, and found my front motor mount was torn. They thought that would fix it. Nope. went back to that dealership a few more times to get it checked out.

A short time after the noise started I also noticed I was burning oil and having blue smoke on startup after the car sat overnight. Also I was finding slivers of metal when I would drain the oil, something metallic was definately being chewed up. The dealership said they would look into it after doing an oil change with dino oil. So next morning I start the car and run and peek at the exhaust, no smoke. Next week I check my oil, didnt burn off anything. Weird eh? So I take it back 3 weeks later and confirm that the car isnt burning oil with the dealership, and have them look at the noise again, as im sitting in the waiting room a guy comes up and asks me if I was interested in a 3, and offered me 10k on the trade in for my p5. I loved the p5 but it was turning into a headache.

mine makes the rattling sound now. only under acceleration. oh and mine is defiently metal on metal....... i will know what it is when i rip my motor apart (after i put my new one in) btw i am not bitching, i knew my motor would not last long. i ran 12 psi for abt a yr and a half and i have been running 22 psi for the last 3-4 months!! :)

i am just curious what i broke so i dont do it to my new motor!!

oh and the rpm range does not matter. if i am accelerating at all it makes the sound!

#1 reason I traded the p5 in. Dealership said they couldnt hear it, then when they did it was because it was starved of oil. Traded it in a few weeks later at a different dealership. There are probably a dozen threads on it. =(

How did the engine get starved of oil?

I just put in some oil detergent (for engines) In, Im running her for 100 to 250klm then flushing the engine with a engine flusher, and after that new oil and injector cleaner.

In others cases it was hard turning, my case was from the bodyshop running the car with no oil in it. But other people who dont drive the car hard have complained of the same noise too.
