Engine chugging

Hey everyone! Hope someone can help me b/c both my mechanic and I are stumped. I have a 2006 Mazda3 2.0L and the engine is chugging and sluggish. I've taken it to my mechanic and hes hooked it up but theres no check engine light and subsequently no codes showing any issues. I changed my spark plugs and he checked the coils and all was well. He also cleaned my maf. Also of note, the exhaust smells funny. Has anyone got any insight?

How many km is on the car? When is it chugging? Just at idle? Or when your going down the road. Normally if its chugging like you say it throws engine light. What kind of spark plug are you using? Make sure your gaps are .052.

This all being said it can be many things like your fuel filter being plugged. Fuel pump dirty air filter.
If you let the tank hit near empty alot you have a high chance of the filter being plugged.
