Engine Break-in Period

I picked up my car in San Diego with 4 miles on the odo and took Mazda at their word regarding minimal engine break-in. Drove 565 miles home on Hwy 99 staying out of cruise control, varying my speed from 60-75 with short passing bursts to 80. The engine only turns around 2000-2500 rpm in sixth at these speeds, so how much abuse could there be?

The guidelines in owners manual work fine. I used them and had good results after 10K miles.

I too took my CUV after 300 KMS for a drive to US (around 350 KMS each side). Since my dealer told that this CUV does not need a break-in and that it can be driven as you like, I did not worry about driving long distance and on cruise for lets say 30 mins at a stretch. Now after reading this I am kind of worried if I have abused my break-in. I see my average mileage to be 10.7 Liter per 100 KMS (which seems to be on a higher side). Although majority of my driving is in the city and my 6 KMs drive to work consists of 15 lights :(. Not sure if its the city driving that is bringing it down or the long trip...

Comments appreciated.

Kept track of the wear metals using UOA on my 07 CX7. The wear metals stabilized at ~ 8,000 miles so this is the mileage that the full breakin was completed. However; the earler UOA at 4,000 miles suggested that a normal breakin could be considered at 4 or 5,000 miles. We must also remember that it is not just the engine the we are polishing and burnishing during breakin but, the transmission and differental also. Ed

Regarding dealership service (for oil change) make an appointment, expect them to have your car for about 1 hour. Had mine done at local Mazda dealership in August, took an hour in early morning. No loaner.

So I took you and the others' advice and scheduled a service appointment since I just hit 5000 miles a few days ago. going in early Saturday. Will check oil levels and such after they complete. I don't trust myself with receipts and other small items lol plus too damn cold to do an oil change out in the street. Hope it goes well, first time taking a car into the dealer for oil change and service.

Gio26NJ - Best of luck, should work out fine. Good to do the checks immediatley after as a precaution. We are damp and chilly here in northern California today (58degrees). Maybe they will wash your car too.

Got the 5,000 mile service done at the delaership. Oil change, Tire Rotation all service checks for $46. Better than I thought they did an excellent job, PSI correct levels, oil correct levels and a very clean job (no spills). No car wash, didn't matter as it has rained the past 2 days. This was Open Road Mazda in East Brunswick, NJ. Would recommend for anyone in Central NJ. My first time taking a car into a dealer for anything lol so I was concerned for no reason at all.

okay, at the risk of sounding a bit like a salesman I'll chime in here with. We are a recent sponsor of Mazdas247.com. You can get it online at our site: http://mazda.handa.com/cx5.html for $6.46 a qt.
Unfortunately, oil is fairly heavy so the shipping isn't cheap, but if your dealer really marks it up a lot or it is a long drive to get to a dealer that has it then it might be worth ordering it.

does the drain plug comes with washers or do we need to install new ones, couldn't find it on your website, same as miatas?

we don't yet have the drain washers available. We are currently limited to just the items shown online but are trying to add items on a regular basis.
