What gear is everyone doing there dyno pulls? 3rd of 4th? Just wondering cause when I do mine I want to be consistent with everyone else.

And how does a dyno work with an auto?

you just bring the car into final gear and then do the pull.....just make sure you have high speed tires on your car.....

I have seen a mix of proteges on a dyno machine and have seen them pull in 3'rd and 4'th with similar results.

3rd will give a higher number, but of course less accurate. 4th gear is closer to a 1:1 ratio and will give the most accurate number. However if your just going for a baseline to tune with later it doesn't matter as much as long as you use that gear each time you return to the dyno.

I know the guy that tunned my car told me that all pulls should be done in 4th he says it gives you the most accurate reading

4th it is! Thanks guys! I was hoping it was 4th anyway cause I'm kinda nervous about 3rd gear if you know what I mean.....

any change in this concensus? is 3rd ok now or is 4th still recommended?

You can ask to do All gear run. That is like running 1st thru 5 th gear. You will that the difference is minor between gears. But still you will be able to see the highest HP.

Depending on the dyno will depend on the gear. All newer version dyno's will not matter what gear you are in. We do them in 3rd gear so that the tire speed is not as high. You can do a 1st gear pull if you choose. As long as the dyno shop is not running an older version dyno( example Dyno Jet 248C or an older version of there software like WinPep 4 or 5). We have a DynoJet 248X.

Here are the 3rd and 4th gear ratios for the Protege5 manual transmission
3rd gear 1.310:1
4th gear 0.970:1
