2024 CX-5 with 5,000 km questions

At the rate you're driving your new CX5 it will take 20 years to get to 250000km. At 5000km it's barely broken in.
oh I agree....When we bought the mitsubishi, we only had one vehicle and I had a 100km round trip to work when I worked out west. Now the cx5 is a second vehicle which my partner uses - and she works a 5 minute walk away, so the thing doesn't get used very much other than weekends, etc...

Yeah maybe it is normal..I just know I've never seen it with my other cars that had a actual needle gauge (even mazdas) so I was kind of surprised.
Most cars have dummy gauges which are not very accurate.

So the only thing I don't get about this is where I am it's about -10 degrees celcius in the morning sometimes. This "blip" of the temp gauge happens within 2 minutes from starting the engine when cold overnight, so I really doubt the temp is almost up to out of the blue range within two minutes of just sitting there...because after the blip and it goes back to 0, it takes a fair bit of time of actual driving for it to get back up out of the blue again. MAke sense? But who knows..maybe that is normal...I'm just getting opinions and seeing if others have noticed it
-10C is quite cold, I'm not surprised it takes a while to get the temp up in those conditions especially if you're not driving at highway speeds. I don't think there is anything wrong with your car. If you want to continue to try to figure out what the computer is doing in regards to cooling, try the following. Turn off climate control system, completely off not just turn down temp settings. Start car, wait a minute or two for idle to start to come down and then drive at highway speeds if possible. Observe what the temp gauge does.

These gauges are not accurate.

It sounds like normal behaviour considering ambient temps.

Hey everyone,Been a while since I posted, but we got a brand new CX-5 NA (No CDA) in August - we are in Nova Scotia, Canada. We have about 5000km on it, and for the most part, we are happy, but I do have a few questions, and thought I'd throw them out here. Thanks in advance for the answers:

1. Is it normal to have a slight play in the steering wheel? If set normally in the driveway not moving and the car on, I can turn it left or right a touch and it feels loose - is that normal?. I have a 2013 mazda 3 and this does not happen. It also has a whine/Whirring in it when turning it back to center from backing out of a driveway for example. Is that just the electronic steering (This is the first car I've had with it)

2. I am down about 2/3 quart of oil. I'm hoping this is just due to the car being new and that should not really happen on the next oil change?

3. The transmission is definitley not super smooth. Seems to be a bit of slipping between 2nd and 3rd when not totally warmed up. Normal? There is a video out there about a reset/relearn of the transmission, but I was under the impression that is to unlearn bad drving habits over the years - not us driving it for 5000km? Thoughts on that? Some people are saying it's normal....some are having their transmissions replaced.

Thanks so much everyone! GReatly appreciated!
Cheers

I purchased a new 22 , 23 ( drove both 30,000 100% trouble free miles) and now a 25 NA - all with CD - - none burned any oil and there was zero play in the steering wheel- nor was there noticeable whinning when turning the wheel back to staright or anything like that -- Trans had delayed lockup 1X after freeway driving dropping back into 1st --but that went away on the 22 ---
Not trying to make you feel bad --- but you purchased this new correct ? How many miles were on the ODO and what was the delivery like --Had the vehicle been previously demo'd or was it a demo ? This oil burning should be re-examined after an oil service which you should do now - and then monitor it again --Check it in the morning as well before start up to get an accurate control level from the day after you get the oil change --this is the most accurate way to know if you are losing oil - cold checks are much cleaner reads than hot -

I'm probably describing the steering issue wrong. I agree, when in motion, its tight and handles well. WHen parked not moving with the engine running, if you jiggle the steering wheel left or right just an inch or so but do it left and right quickly, it is like there is no resistance at all until there is and there is a little clunk when that happens - this makes it feel "loose/sloppy" etc. I only have my 2013 mazda 3 to compare it to. When I do the same thing, there is no change in resistance (it is tight from the start) so there is no feeling of looseness at all , or slight clunk.

Does that make more sense?

As for the whirring noise in the steering wheel, imagine backing out of your driveway onto the street. YOu cut your wheel sharply to get out on the street. And when you turn the steering wheel to stratighten the wheels to get moving forward, it makes the whirring noise. I do not hear this noise any other time while driving - it only seems to be when turing the wheel all the back to straight after being hard cut.

Now this honestly may be normal for these as I have never had a vehicle without power steering fluid, so maybe it's the the electric steering.

I hope that helps describe it :)
thats not normal -

Show your local dealer the engine oil level and the shift, get a video of the trans behavior too if you can.

Unless someone has redlined your car multiple times before the 5000km mark, excessive oil consumption and the surging shift is not normal and should be escalated.
All those

This all sounds highly abnormal for a premier superiorly engineered Japan made CX5 -- They just dont have these types of issues when new - Ive had 3 -- recent models and drove on long trips with all --no issues - This is something you want to stay ontop of because it sounds suspiciously like a vehicle that was driven before- either a demo or by sales and possibly abused --- redlining a new engine can cause burning oil --particularly if not fully warmed up -- to many things dont seem right here --inspect the tires and rims for contact locations on the tires and rims -- if someone hit a curb etc --the steering can get tweaked -- transmission as well -- hard drving cold and abusive abrupt shifting --- this needs to be documented at the dealer for starters -- make them put in the the system for future related issues or lemon law possibilities -- good luck
