Adding Puddle Lights...Wiring Question (2021 CX-5)

Hi everyone! I have a 2021 CX-5 Signature, and I plan to add external puddle lights (walk-up lights under the car). My goal is to wire them to the dome lights so they turn on when I unlock the car and turn off when I lock it. To avoid any issues with the dome light circuit's power limitations, I plan to use a relay and fuse wired to the dome lights.

However, I'm having trouble locating the 12V positive (+) and negative (-) wires for the dome lights under the dash. Does anyone know exactly where these wires are or have a wiring diagram to share?

Also, if I wire the puddle lights to the dome lights, would they stay on whenever the car is unlocked, even if the doors are closed? Would they also stay on when the dome lights are activated (e.g., when a door is opened)?

Alternatively, is there a better way to wire them to function like standard puddle lights? Ideally, I want them to activate only when the car is unlocked and turn off when it is locked, but not stay on unnecessarily. Would tapping into the car’s locking/unlocking signal or another circuit be a better option?

If anyone has experience doing something similar or suggestions for achieving this setup, I’d really appreciate your advice. Thanks in advance!

Mazda has oem puddle lights. Have you looked at those?
the wiring was somewhere in the door if I recall

Awesome thank you. Does anyone know if the wiring is in the CX5 already. If i have to do it myself that is fine with me but it would make it easier if it was already around the door area

I reached out to that company and got the installation manuals albeit they are in Japanese they will work. just before i bite the bullet and order the lights i want to make sure that you think that tis will work with these manuals.

To be honest, I have no idea.

I was just providing a link to the OEM welcome (puddle) lights :)

Here’s some install videos (also in Japanese), but they may help:

I did the same thing. After looking at the instructions, it seems to me that these lights are installed on the frame, not on the doors.

Which is fine with me. I actually wanted them on the frame. To save some money I might just do the diy install.

I can easily modify the exterior plastic trim to fit my lights. I know this might over complicate things but I was thinking about using a relay on the dome light circuit. Which is “linked” to the puddle light circuit. I will probably add a switch somewhere in there for more user control.

I am also going to add the same lights to the interior of the trunk. I have that all figured out though. I installed a trailer hitch and wiring so I understand how all the trunk wiring works.

I have added puddle light under the side mirror on my cx5, its getting power from the dome light, the issue i had with it is the slow fading feature for the halogen bulbs, to fix the issue i used diode connected to capacitor to switch a relay, this smooths out the fade off. The dome light is negative switched, i used the same relay to change it to positive switched.

My car has the full led interior and exterior lights. If i run into this issue i am glad that i got a solution. Where did you get the dome light power from? did you et it from under the dash or from the dome light connecter itself? I was planning on using a relay connected to the dome light switch. then getting the power from the battery. I think the LED lights i am getting are going to be dimmable but the diode might still be needed.

Thank you
