there's a list somewhere out there that is basically a hotlist of songs that the riaa is watching for...obviously they are watching out for more popular songs and such...i'll have to find the site again...

so basically if you download anything that's been on the radio in the past year or so it's probably on the list

Go to the website for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. They have a list of people who are being targetted by the RIAA. You can input your username or your IP address and they'll tell you if you're on the subpoena list.

While you're at it, read up on the issues at hand. The organization is on the front lines fighting for consumer rights. Sign their petition, get educated, fight.

They may not actually know what you downloaded, unless they got a C&D or subpoena (huh huh, I said subpoena) from the RIAA. Some places, university's especially, have just been monitoring traffic. They can see that you are participating, but they don't know what you are actually doing. Hopefully that is how they picked you up.

I know a couple computer guys that work for the goverment. They know a lot about what has been going on with this Kazaa thing.

They had told me that they are mostly targeting music files. They catch people by the uploading. There are 2 ways to prevent it. Turn off the uploading. The way to really do it is... completly remove Kazaa!!

sorry to hear about your situation bijou. a kid was warned by a head teacher right in the middle of my animation class to stop downloading files from kazaa. the teacher wasn't our teacher, but he found out and walked right in, disrupted the class session and told him sraight out to stop. scary s***. it should be a crime to download 50cent regardless, he's garbage. good luck though.

I don't know, as soon as I get the lists I will let you know, but they didn't say anything excepts I have downloaded copyrights stuff and I said I only downloaded korean TV shows which is not subjects to copyrights.
I'm thinking he was trying to scare me or something.

Cool, I didn't mean it to sound like I thought you were stupid. But copyrights carry internationally as well, unless they just didn't copyright it. We have reciprocal enforcement agreements with basically every other country on the planet (except the evil ones).

Nah, my job sucks. I'm an economist and I spend all day looking at circuits, slapping stuff together, and wishing I had money to go back and get a PHd.

You may have just shot yourself in the foot. All TV shows are copyright protected, whether they are American, Japanese, Russian or Korean. Actually almost all forms of media are copyrighted. What the RIAA and most movie studios and schools are going after are the people who download these files and share them. If you do not have file sharing disabled on Kazaa or other P2P programs then eveything you have downloaded is also able to be shared. What the school probably looked at is how much storage space you are using, if it's on a school mainframe, and they can judge that against how much space other students you to judge whether you are storing too much. Also if you store any info on school or business computers they have the right to look at and view any info you keep on there. Any system admin can access it without much work at all. If you want to keep your stuff private then you need to keep it on a personal computer that is not online.

All in all what many people don't realize is that by downloading music and movies you are taking money out of other peoples pockets. The artists, actors, studio and record labels puyt a lot of time, effort and money in to making their product to sell to you and you basically stole it. I'm not saying that what they charge for the product is a fair price mind you but htey have the right to charge what they want. If you don't want to pay that price then don't buy it, if enough people don't buy it then the price will go down.

actually, I have all the datas in my computer.
I don't use kazaa, I don't share files, because I feel uncomfortable sharing with my files with others. they just think I have downloaded copyright files because due to mainly high bandwidth traffics on my port.
but we will see about how much information they have.
seriously, I'm so excited for this meeting.

Well, they are focusing on anything and everything. Remember that there are only three huge media conglomerates controlling just about everything you see and hear. So chances are the record company that distributes 50 Cent also owns a motion picture studio.

Where did you study copyright law? I can tell you, that IN korea, there is little/none enforcement of copyrights -

I realize it - I just don't care. It's NOT taking money out of their pockets. That's a bad analogy. That would imply they HAD the money in the first place. A better analogy is "It's like NOT giving a crying baby, a bottle". The RIAA and Metallica are the 'crying babies', and my hard-earned dollar is the bottle.

Talk about 'stealing' - Record labels have stolen more from artists than any amount of file-sharing.

The RIAA only cares about MP3's. They don't give a s*** about anything else on your PC. Nobody else is actively trying to nail people right now, except for a couple of porn companies.

Most of the other groups (software, video, etc) have not been bothering people unless somebody else turns you in. But some universities have decided it would be a good idea to police themselves. So another group may not even be involved.

hey I just finished off the meeting and wow it was the movie the core I downloaded using bit torrents.
so it wasn't the school who had on eyes on me, it was the Bay TSP inc had watch on paramount pict movies.
