Difference with aftermarket flywheel

Anyone happen to switch there flywheel yet out of the p5?Thinking of getting the 9lbs flywheel , but would like to see if this will actually gives my car a little more speed. If anyone has actually dyno this, that will be great.. hope to hear from you guys...I am more interested in the torque gains.

thanks

no one here has dyno'd the flywheel, several folks have it (and the 15 lb mazdaspeed flywheel). It will definitely improve acceleration, but it's effects only become pronounced with turbo or a tuned N/A setup. One worry of people is that the lighter flywheel will mess with your idle, but no one here has spoken of that.
Search "9 lb" in the search function, you'll find the threads on the flywheel.

And Welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like blynzoo said, do a search for flywheel... There are some really good posts a few weeks/months back...

I had a 9lb fidanza in my 94PGT and it was great. It won't affect the idle at all, just the speed at which the engine revs... Good luck!

did it lower your idle some? what was the before/after?

To my knowledge, too light of a flywheel can affect your idle if your car has a turbo on it. This is the theory that I've known for years, but I've yet to see it actually ring true.

Thanks guys for the info.. I am thinking of getting a turbo , but not anytime soon.. need to save up for it.. I had read some treads about the flywheel, but I don't think anyone has dyno.. Guess I will look futher into and hopefully find some numbers...

Well, i have a 9lb-er sitting in my APT, WAITING FOR A CLUTCH to come in. :-(

It didn't affect the idle at all...
It changed how fast the engine would rev both up and down in RPM's. Shifting took a little getting used to, since it revved so damn fast, you had to apply more throttle between gear changes to help with smooth engagement. It helps acceleration by letting the engine build RPM's faster... It made a great improvement overall though. Before the fidanz, I had the factory flywheel lightened from 21 to 18 lbs and even that made a very noticeable difference. But as far as the idle went, it was unaffected. :)

Great, thanks for the info! Another fact to catalogue away.."9lbs is cool for our cars"
APEXistud......that's interesting what you say. I'd like to hear from someone who had that happen to them...hmmm

Um, the stocker is 18 lbs. not 21. The Mazdaspeed flywheel is 15 (J-spec MP3).

I heard about the flywheel thing on ClubSI a while back and a few different guys on the board seemed to believe it. A few local tuners also agreed, but like I was saying. I've never actually saw it happen.

The stocker in a 1994 Ford Probe GT is 21 pounds... :)
I have yet to mess with anything substantial in my P5. If you read my first post higher in the thread, I explained it was the PGT. ;)

I think the mazdaspeed flywheel would be a good investment for the P5. 15lbs would make a noticeable difference, and would probably help a good bit if I added a Clutchmasters Stage 1 or even Stage 0.
