Factory backup camera with aftermarket head unit

Hey. I have a 2014 CX-5. I recently replaced the factory head unit with an aftermarket one. A module was installed to retain the factory wiring with the factory backup camera. The voltage was stepped down from 12volts to 6volts to power the factory backup camera. The image looks absolutely awful. It is almost unusable during the day and completely unusable at night. I didn't expect great as it's an older lower resolution camera on a newer screen, but not anywhere remotely this bad. Has this been anyone else's experience? If the factory camera just isn't up for the task can anyone make a recommendation for a replacement camera that goes in the OEM spot?

Moving this from the end of a thread discussing the opposite scenario

OK an update to this... If you are replacing your Mazda head unit (due to the crap handling of the USB, or any other reason), you CAN keep your factory rear-view camera and use it with your new aftermarket head unit. Having just done this with my car today, I can tell you what works for a 2014 CX-5 Touring (at least).
