I know there are some of us who get more serious about cleaning/protecting their car, so post up your thoughts, pics, and questions in here.

Keep in mind we have a detailing forum as well, but this will remain local for the 6/MS6.

Discuss.

great thread steve!

i think for a cheap quick shine to make ur paint smooth for $10....is Nu Finish.. My paint comes out smooth after it and for the money i think its worth it. Unless people have tried something else for $10 that works great.. Let me know

My products I'm using right now are Meguiar's clay bar, Klasse All-in-one polish, Klasse paint sealant, and top that off with Meguiars Gold Class or Meguiar's carnauba wax, usually 1-2 coats.

let us get some Zaino reviews.. did you buy the whole kit or which ones...

my friend and i been wanting to order Zaino for a while now

can we get some feedback?

yeah ill do a write up on it later on tonight, i got the full Zaino kit about 6 months ago..should be posted by the morning ill try and find some good before and after pics.. there is a breif write up on Zaino itslef in the detailing section i beleive.. but ill post my experience.

Zaino is expensive stuff, and it does work for darker cars. I still feel like there are more cost effective alternatives, but as long as the car looks good in the end, and you're happy, that's what matters.

Great thread, I'd love to hear how you guys are keeping the Black Mica's clean. As for myself, I have a friend who works at the stealership and he got me a mazda car wash kit. Comes with wash and wax, glass cleaner, multi purpose cleaner, a sponge, 2 shammys and a wash bucket. Not sure how much the kit goes for, I could care less I got it for free :D.

As for the interior I use Armour All for the dash and headunits ect. All I need now is something to maintain the 2 tone leather... I was going to buy leather wipes but it was around $10 for 20 wipes? Not the best deal so I was wondering what you guys are using for leather...

I use the Lexol leather cleaner/conditioner on my shift boot, steering wheel, armrest, and shift knob, and like it. I also use it in the other cars I clean/maintain with good success.

Boosted, are you using any type of machine for your car?

I'm currently shopping around for a DA polisher, either the PC7424XP or the UDM.

yea how much do decent buffers usually go for?

The PC7424 with a good selection of starting pads is about $250. You can get other kits with some products for cheaper, but they also have fewer pads. The UDM on the other hand is a little bit cheaper, but I'm not quite sure how they compare to each other.

I've been using the UDM. It hasn't failed on me yet.
It does get pretty hot if you use it for a long time, doing a full correction.

After a while I jumped onto a Rotary Makita. It's a steeper learning curve than a DA
But it does correct a bit faster. I still finish up with the UDM though.

Ok guys here's my little Zaino Review

The Kit i bought was the ZKIT-2 or Zaino Ultimate Protection Show Car Kit.

Kit Contents:

ZFX Flash Cure Accelerator Additive
Z-2 PRO Show Car Polish for Clear Coated Car Finishes
Z-5 PRO Show Car Polish for Swirl Marks and Fine Scratches
Z-6 Ultra Clean Gloss Enhancer Spray
Z-7 Show Car Wash
Z-9 Leather Soft Spray Cleaner
Z-10 Leather in a Bottle
Z-16 Perfect Tire Gloss
Z-18 ClayBar
Zaino Metallic Silver Decal

I also bought Z-AIO Zaino All In One

Shipped to me it all Costed about $153

Description for each Product (taken from the Zaino Website)

ZFX Flash Cure Accelerator Additive

ZFX is a Zaino Show Car Polish cross-linking and acceleration additive. It offers near-instant cure time, reduced surface distortion, enhanced polish flexibility, and improved bonding to both paint and additional layers of Show Car Polish. In simple terms, ZFX vastly improves paint surface appearance and increases polish durability.

Z-2 PRO Show Car Polish for Clear Coated Car Finishes

The extraordinary gloss, shine, depth, clarity, and reflectivity make Z-2 PRO the highest rated and most respected product in the industry. Z-2 PRO is so easy and applies so thin that an 8 ounce bottle can yield up to 24 applications of product! Durability, looks, ease of use, and cost per application make Z-2 PRO the pure winner.

Z-5 PRO Show Car Polish for Swirl Marks and Fine Scratches

Darker colored vehicles are prone by the easily visible surface marring or fine scratches from regular maintenance. Z-5 PRO and its micro filling technology gradually reduce the appearance of these surface imperfections without using any abrasives. Without using cheap oils or cheap fillers that merely last until your next car wash, Z-5 PRO protects and lasts like no other product.

Z-6 Ultra Clean Gloss Enhancer Spray

The Best Quick Detailer ive EVER used!!!!

For quick detailing between washes or a quick wipe down after washes, Z-6 enhances and maintains the Zaino look. Z-6 is so concentrated, that a little really does go a long way. By far, a customer favorite, a bottle of Z-6 should always be close at hand. For fast and safe removal of dust, water spots, finger prints, and light soil, use Z-6 frequently.

Z-7 Show Car Wash

Without any harsh detergents, Z-7 uses special water based lubricants to buffer the paint from scratches, swirling, or marring. Even in hard water conditions, Z-7 produces long lasting suds that gently slide dirt, grit, and debris off your vehicle surface. Frequent use of Z-7 within the Zaino system will enhance the gloss and extend the durability of Zaino protectant products.

Z-9 Leather Soft Spray Cleaner

Designed to clean without any harsh detergents, Z-9 safely cleans and restores the like new look of leather without damaging the clear coat protection or natural oils in leather. Z-9 is so gentle, that it doesn’t cause premature leather damage including cracking, shrinking, and drying.

Z-10 Leather in a Bottle

Customers LOVE our Z-10 Leather in a Bottle, and for good reason! Z-10 softens and brings back the smell of leather. With Ultra-Gard UV protection, and our exclusive real leather oil concentrate, Z-10 penetrates and preserves all fine leathers for years of beautiful service. After just one use, your car will have that great new leather smell again. No harmful silicone oils and no greasy looks here. For a subtle satin conditioned finish, you’ll love Z-10 too!

Z-16 Perfect Tire Gloss

Perfect is right. One application of Z-16 leaves an incredibly durable, water repellent, perfect looking satin finish, that's only slightly glossy and dry to the touch. Our unique formula contains Ultra-Gard UV protection and our exclusive moisturizing and antistatic solution to prevent drying, cracking and browning. Z-16 helps repels dust and dirt to keep your tires looking great, longer. Z-16 is not greasy and won’t sling off onto your paint.

Z-18 ClayBar

Whether old or new, claying a vehicles surface is very important to its overall health and appearance. Particularly important on brand new cars, claying removes surface and embedded contaminants that are harmful to the life of the finish. These spots, stains, or residues seriously detract from the depth of the paint and the performance of any applied sealant or wax product. If your car isn’t baby skin glass smooth to the touch, you could benefit from claying the surface. Conventional soaps and polishes simply can’t clean the surface like claying can.

Z-AIO All-in-one

For a one stop product, Z-AIO is an excellent solution to simplify surface maintenance. Used by hand or with a random orbital buffer, Z-AIO can either be used by itself, or as an excellent foundation to the Zaino protectant and sealant system. Z-AIO’s emulsifying cleaning action and very fine abrasives are perfectly safe for all vehicle types... auto, marine, air, etc.

The whole kit comes in a Bucket

Heres a pic of what came with the kit (the Z-7 is not shown because i ran out)

These are the best pictures i could find as of right now that shows the car after being done with the Zaino Kit..

the kit is easy to use, u have to work fast while applying the polish so i always do a 2ftx2ft section at a time.. i hand applied the polish, but i tried using my porter cable buffer as well with it and actually liked the hand application result alot better..

more to come on Zaino tomorrow

Now as for the Poorboy's Stuff i have

Poorboy's Wheel Wax/Sealent
Poorboy's Leather Stuff
Poorboy's SSR 3
Poorboy's Super Slick & Sud's Car Wash

ZainoReviewPics005.jpg

The Wheel Sealent is Applied like ur Typical Wax. It's very thick and paste like.. apply to a haze and wipe clean..It protects ur Wheels against road grime, dust, scratches, dirt etc..with this applied ive found that it is much easier to clean my Wheels and there has been less brake dust on them..

The Leather Stuff is applied by hand, u squirt alittle of it on ur clean palm and rub it into the leather and about an hour later wipe clean, gives ur leather a really soft feel and smells great... i was amazed at how dirty mine were after using this product, i previously used leather wipes all the time but not anymore..

The SSR3 is for deep scratches, i had a few so i used this product on them with very good results, u will need to use a buffer for this step.. with my porter cable it was setting 4 or 5 and then i used a polishing compound to bring the shine back..

The Super Suds is great..alittle better then the Z-7 i had from Zaino..i use a very soft Fieldcrest 100% Cotton Bath Towel everytime i wash my car, they are very hard to find and expensive..

Boosted, are you using any type of machine for your car?

I'm currently shopping around for a DA polisher, either the PC7424XP or the UDM.

I'm using a Porter Cable 7424 XP bought it as a kit from www.Autogeek.net

Kit Contents:

Porter Cable 7424XP Polisher
Porter Cable 7424XP Wrench
Porter Cable 7424XP Counter Weight
5 Inch Backing Plate
2-CCS White 6.5 Inch Polishing Foam Pads
2-CCS Gray 6.5 Inch Finishing Foam Pads
1-CCS Blue 6.5 Inch Finessing Foam Pad
2 Cobra White Microfiber Polishing Cloths
12 oz. Pinnacle XMT Polishing Pad Cleaner
12 oz. Pinnacle XMT Polishing Pad Conditioner
1 Flat Wrench & 1 Counterweight

I'm very pleased with how the kit works and the porter cable is easy to get used to and very user friendly.. pads are easy to clean and can be reused if u take care of them.

Enjoy!!

lexol products work great. i have the black.white interior which gets dirty FAST. but witht the lexol leather cleaner, brush, and microfiber cloth, it picks all that dirt up and looks like new. i usually go over that with the armor all leather gel. makes it look nice, and protects against uv rays and what not. as for exterior. ive always used meguiars clay bar when detailing.

My detailing inventory consists of;

Poorboys Super Slick & Suds Shampoo
Meguiars Lambswool Wash Mitt
Chemical Guys Miracle Dryer Drying Towels
Eurow Waffle Weave Drying Towels
Sonus SFX Ultra Fine Clay
Dodo Juice Born Slippy Clay Lube
Poorboys Black Hole Glaze
Sonus Der Wunder Buffing Towels
Poorboys EX-P Sealant
Collinite 915 Wax
Meguiars Foam Applicator Pads
Sonus Der Wunder Polishing Towels
and
WD-40, which I use for cleaning plastic trim.

Most of these products are really great and it is possible to achieve a fantastic finish with them, given enough time and care. The Eurow drying towels are not good with large amounts of water, whilst they are very absorbant and don't damage the finish, they don't hold that much water. The Meguiars mitt is good at what it does, but it is single sided and not really built to last. I will probably try the Dodo Juice Wookie hand when I get a new mitt. Poorboys EX-P sealant gives a very nice finish and lasts quite well, but it is a pig to use by hand and takes a long time to remove residue, although that could be poor technique on my part, it is supposed to be used very sparingly. The Black Hole glaze is also very good in terms of finish and is much easier to use than the sealant, but it is only good for very light swirl removal and probably only worthwhile if you have a great paint finish that has always been very well cared for. The SSS shampoo is a very easy to use product, as most shampoos are and it lasts forever, but it isn't the best shampoo for removing more stubborn particles. Born Slippy is a good lube, although most people seem to prefer to use shampoo, quick detailing spray or even just water, you certainly need to use quite large volumes for it to work properly, which would be expensive if you were claying regularly. I don't really have any criticisms of any of the other products and those that I have commented on are still very capable products.

I'm still pretty new to proper detailing and still have plenty of things I need to buy like tyre dressing, leather cleaner, glass polish, etc.

Frustratingly, despite my best attempts to keep the paintwork looking nice, it wasn't properly cared for by the previous owner and needs a good polish, but I am some way off buying a machine polisher and polishing by hand is unlikely to remove everything. I also have a very big issue with stone chips, to the point, that I am considering either a full respray or vinyl wrap.

What is the best thing to use on some deeper scratches? I have a few under the driver's door handle and a small rust spot on the roof.. I need to get them out they look awful..

I'd start with some clay, work the surface, then use some basic polish first, then step up to a fine cut rubbing compound if you need to. Depends on how bad the scratch is though. You always want to start with the mildest cut and work up, then work back down.

try using Poorboy's SSR2 and SSR3, really good for deep scratches..then using a polishing compound after that.. u can try SSR1 but that's mainly for light surface scratches.. but as tunersteve said, wash it claybar it and wash it again before doing so.
