Dealer oil change uses Phillips 66 Synthetic Blend 0w20

Mazda Moly oil is a higher cost option and dealers in my area doesn't even stock it. Phillips Syn blend is very good oil and meats all Mazda requirements. Ed

Thank you guys! Now I feel more comfortable. Will monitor MPG to see if there's any difference and try to keep 4000mi OCI. For free oil changes, guess the expectation has to be reasonable :-)

Dealers use the cheapest bulk oil they can find and car manufactures normally have no power to assure their dealers using their recommended oil. I wouldn't be happy if our CX-5 been put in Phillips 66 Synthetic Blend 0W-20 because you never know the long-term effect from it. But it's your CX-5 and you need to make your own decision.

I change oil by myself and always use Mazda moly oil because it's required by Flexible Maintenance schedule on oil changes which I'm using.

Be aware of those free oil changes offered by dealers! My Mazda dealer uses "Preferred Choice"(eek2) 0W-20 oil for standard oil change. Only $10 more to use Mazda moly oil.

Interesting...they fed my machine Castrol 0w-20 on my last oil change. Seemed expensive, paid $79 for oil change, filter and lube. And if I read it right, lube means all the hinges and seals right? I don't even know how to check if they did that part!

My dealer offered three free oil changes and both the two changes so far I've asked them if they use MM oil and they have said that's all they use in these cars. I ask them several times each time and even called them once and that's what they say. I have no way of proving it other than asking to see the bottles or sending in a sample but I so far I see no reason to not believe them. I'm not going to sweat the three free changes too much. They also gave me a $500 gift card for that dealer which I used to buy all weather mats and will use the rest for MM oil and filters, maintenance etc. to do mysef after my third and last free change.

But, as you said, some dealers use whatever oil. That "Preferred Choice" looks...interesting!

To make sure you are getting Mazda Moly oil, just watch them pour it into your engine from the quart containers it comes in. Ed

Lots of tricks here. I used to work part time at a full service gas station years ago. One of the evening workers use to keep a few empty cans of oil on the oil rack. When he checked someones oil he would tell the customer that they were a few quarts low and then grab the empty cans and pretend he was adding oil. Eventually he got caught and fired, but there's a lot of jerks out there.

College - working part time was specifically told by manager @ XXXBoys: If woman, under 25 requiring oil change make sure to ask him (the manager) 1st. the total # of quarts required. Then he would give 1/3rd. new dino, 1/3 terribly old dino and 1/3 - leave it empty. When he handed over the keys he would tell her there's a report that this particular model burns oil but he doesn't want to overcharge her. XXXBoys has a lot of padded fees. So he advised her, once in a while when in a gas station top up. Invariably she would ask her to show him and he would sell a quart too, show her under the hood how-to. Yhey are usually from the area and he'd offer to help her 1st. time and take her number too.

Many dealers don't allow you to get into service area and you simply can't see what they're doing. I'd request 5 empty Mazda moly oil bottles been left in the trunk.

My dealer charges $50 for oil change with "Preferred Choice"(eek2) 0W-20 oil, $60 with Mazda moly oil. I'd gladly pay $10 extra if I don't change oil by myself.

Non OE oil may meet GL-5 specs and be approved BUT only Mazda oil with Moly is the perfect oil.

Why does Mazda use Moly additive? Because of its shear strength. Any car that has a High Pressure Fuel Pump that's cam driven puts a lot of stress on the oil. Just read some of the VW forums about people that didn't use the correct oil
and had cams/fuel pumps/follower's damaged!

Ya, I was one of the unlucky few and the repair cost over $2K
Link to my Golf R damage! http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?6871374-When-thy-say-quot-Check-your-follower-quot

Use non moly oil at your own risk!

Or, just add some of this!

Been doing this for my last 4 cars and it speaks volumes. https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned) OR https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)

OP didn't ask for the "best oil" to use. He merely asked if the oil his dealership uses should cause concern.- No. Any 0w20 GL-5 oil is good enough to have your skyactiv engine last a really long time assuming if oil is changed regularly. That said OP has the option to bring his own oil to the dealership.

What sets certain GL-5 oils apart from others are their additives specifically the "sacrificial metals they contain".

Now in terms of Mazda's "moly" it is there choice of additive and a really good one. It has high amounts of it as a safety net and allows Mazda oil to have the lowest viscosity numbers of this list. The best bang value for buck imho is the Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 which could be had for half the price of Mazda oil with almost as low viscosity numbers and using titanium as its sacrificial metal. Another good oil is Amsoil's 0w20 with low viscosity numbers and the most proven for racing/track purposes. You need a hook up or membership to get Amsoil. Lastly Mobil 1 AFE 0w20 is a solid one but not as good as the three mentioned.

Took my car for the first oil change today and I had inquired about the Mazda Moly oil. The service advisor had no idea what it was and also asked one of the technicians who did not know either. They said they would look into it. When I returned to pick up my car, she told me that they figured out what I was talking about. Apparently they use the Moly additive because they buy it in bulk? It seems fine to me but just wanted to see if anyone had any similar experiences. Also, I think they mentioned that they use Mobil 1 oil.
