CX-5 Battery Replacement recommendation?

16.5 GT w/Tech AWD
I need a new battery for my 2016.5 GT AWD CX5. I am replacing the original battery, so this is my first new battery experience. Should I go with the "Mazda" battery @ my dealer 2yr replacement warranty / 84MO (prorated) warranty $250, includes labor.

If I buy on my own, what brands & specs. should I consider beyond the right type / size for my CX5? Will I need to "re-set" or lose any existing saved functions with a new install?

I need to replace within the next 5 business days. I'm the orig. owner of the car. It has 48K miles & I've not had any issues with the original battery. I live in the Seattle WA area and my car is not garaged. I plan to keep this car for 2 yrs.

These "discount auto parts" stores are all a sham with their overinflated pricing. NOTHING discounted at all and most items can be found on rockauto for much much lower or amazon if in a pinch. I LMAO at their prices, coupons or not, they're way above reality IN FANTASY LAND. For example, I needed to purchase a simple coolant temp sensor for a 2006 honda civic. Local autozone, advance or O'Reilly's wanted $55 to $60 for that. Rockauto they're $15 to $20 for a good brand. Same brand on amazon, $25. In no way does it justify a store to charge nearly triple for something. If Costco can sell this battery for $125, then you know how much markup there is at these "discount stores and how much money is burned if a person doesn't know any better.

These things are easy to install folks. Learn it once, get the knowledge and satisfaction and be smarter for life.
Yes, I buy from at parts stores only when I'm in a pinch. Like oil, ATF or coolant.

As a rule, I don't buy any sensors from Rock or parts stores. I tested several in the past and they have different resistance and magnetic strength than oem. Other sensors were longer and hit the reluctor wheel, killing them.

I have a closet full of bloody t shirts from cheap, parts stores sensors.

Just because they don't throw a code doesn't mean they are in calibration. Been there too...

Perhaps your installation methods need a bit of adjustment?

I would suggest wearing red shirts whenever you work on your cars.

what did you go with? the 250 sounded good to me,you dont touch it and you got 9 years from the other one

I bought a battery from costco and replaced it myself using a 10mm wrench in less than 20 min. It was the first time I changed a battery.

So long as your battery does not corrode badly at the terminals, if you want your battery to last, hook it up to a tender when the car sits for long periods, esp. in cold weather, after short distance drives, that should help the battery last longer than what battery you buy,

Huh went down a buck. Pretty sure I paid $125 even plus tax in 2023 when I replaced a Costo Interstate I had bought for $75 in 2018 which replaced the original battery.

I'm on my 3rd battery. So far so good on this one.

+1 for its easy to replace yourself. Remember you'll need a 10mm deep socket for the bar that goes accross the battery to hold it in place. The nut sits fairly far down on the threads so a regular socket can't reach.

you get around 5 years from each battery? I use that mark to replace mine ,never had any issue's yet

On my previous car, a Mazda CX-5 GT AWD Premium Plus, the last battery I've installed was an AGM battery 665 CCA or something around that number. I can't remember exactly. But it was AGM, group 35 over 650 CCA. It worked flawlessly.

My current one purchased in ‘22 from Costco was $99

I have a couple old batteries that allows me to wheel in a core at purchase time.

It is still showing around 95% health using my tester. I usually replace them when health has dropped to 75-80%

I recently had to replace mine. I tried the Costco Interstate option to save money (I thought). I choose an AGM so they are bit more than $120. That battery failed after only 2 months. Gave it back to Costco and got a full refund (even gave my core credit back). Went to Mazda shop and bought a fresh OEM (was just delivered that day). The cost of the OEM where I live was only a few dollars more than the Costco offering (of the AGM).

Interesting. I'm 3 years into my 2nd Interstate from Costco. First one lasted 5 years.

Am at nearly the 5yr mark for my CX-5's battery. (An Optima RedTop 35, 720cca, 44aH, 90min reserve, 3yr warr.)

Considering the idea of going slightly oversize, along with decent group 35 options. Will figure it out by the end of Summer. No need to swap-in a new battery yet, but I'm currently mulling options.

  • Optima RedTop 35 AGM -- 720 CCA, 44 aH, 90min reserve, SAE Type A terminals, size 9.4"L x 7.8"W x 7.7"H
  • Optima RedTop D34 AGM -- 800 CCA, 50 aH, 100min reserve, SAE Type A terminals, size 10.1"L x 6.9"W x 7.9"H
  • Optima Yellowtop D34 AGM -- 750 CCA, 55 aH, 120min reserve, SAE Type A terminals, size 10.1"L x 6.9"W x 7.9"H
  • Optima Yellowtop DH7 AGM -- 880 CCA, 80 aH, 155min reserve, DIN Type A1 terminals (slightly larger), size 12.5"L x 6.9"W x 7.5"H
  • EverStart Platinum H7 AGM -- 850 CCA, 140min reserve, 4yr warr, ?"L x ?"W x 7.5"H

Will be beefing-up the primary ground cables on the car, this year, once the weather improves.

Will also be carefully measuring the space and considering potential 'nipping' of the two rearward tabs, if I decide to go with the H7 sized battery.
