computer sluts- video card question:

i wanna get my lil bro a grfx card for gaming... any suggestions? max = $160
tia.

depending on what games he's playing, you can easily get away with one of ATI's low enders (9200-9600 Radeon).

They're plenty powerful and might be cheaper than your established limit

gimme model togan...

i want best bang for the buck, he's playing those high end games lol sorry i stopped following that stuff like 5 yrs ago so im outdated... i was considering 9600/9600xt/9700 (ATI) ... and also geforce, but i dunno which model geforces are gooddd...

KEEP EM COMIN!

nvidia were the ones who came up with the hoover card.... nothing to be too proud of, and besides, even their latest offerings they are behind on ati. so whicherver way you look at it, ati is the way to go

I little bump in core speeds, if I remember correctly, for virtually no price difference...at least, initially there wasn't.

And the big reason I suggest ATi is for purposes of visual quality...they're hardware and programming is head and shoulders above Nvidia for that. If you need more info HardOCP.com...best geek site, 3v4r!

do not go for the 9600 ati...go for the 9600pro or the 9600xt...a 9600pro with 256mb is only like 149 or something...and the 9600xt with 128mb is only 150...but if you can dish out 20 more on my max ammount...go for the 9600xt with 256mb...the xt has a faster core speed and cab produce better graphics...go here: http://www.newegg.com/app/manufactory.asp?catalog=48&DEPA=1...they have all the video card you need...and cheep too and 2 day shipping...good luck:)

DO NOT GO WITH Nvidia unless you go with the 5950XT, it is a little faster than the 9600pro for the same price, if you don't want nvidia go with the 9600pro 256MB

these are your only options

256 mb is silly for the 9600 xt since it'll never run high enough res with antialiasing enabled or complex functions and acceptable speed to utilize it

you can get a 128 meg ATI 9800 pro for around 200 bucks which is the best deal currently

otherwise get a 128 meg 9600 xt (burnout)

What I would do.. IF you can find one, buy an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro 128mb card. You will need to do a bit of tweaking to it though but it'll be the best bang for the buck.

A 9600, no matter what it is, pro, xt, 256mb, whatever, only has four pipelines to throw data through. The 9800 has eight. Now, the replacements for the 9500 and the 9700 respectively were the 9600 and the 9800 respectively. The 9500 also goes by the four pipeline design.. however, what most people don't know is that all a 9500 is is a tuned-down 9700. Stock it runs four pipelines, but it HAS eight because that's what the 9700 has.. Basically, it's the same card, turned down.. You can download a tweak to turn it into a 9700 which will own any 9600 all over the place.. They are getting rarer and harder to find though.

As mentioned before, check out the [H]ardforums over at [H]ardOCP. www.hardforum.com www.hardocp.com

This is the same reason instead of buying a faster CPU I'm just getting an AMD 2500+ XP with the Barton core at 333mhz fsb.. All you gotta do is turn the fsb up to 400 and voila, instant 3200+ XP.

It's just like modding cars. :D

Personally, I'm going to be getting an All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro. Just cause I have money to burn. :D And I wanna be able to record TV to my computer. :D

Bump, I need a new card, I just gotta pop it into the inside of my computer right? Anything else I should know? I just need a card that makes my games look better and makes them faster, I don't need a tv tuner, recorder etc.

My vote goes to ATI.
I have owned nearly every generation of Radeon (7000-9800XT)
I have also used two high end nVidia GPU's (5600, and 5950 Ultra)

The 5600 is in my nephew's PC, as I gave it to him free.
And the 5950 right now is not being used at all.

I think the most bang for your buck is the 9600 line, and a good AMD CPU.

(these comments are totaly biased, as I work for AMD, and built a PC for ATI, but they are still true )

9800pro..newegg.com has them for like 200$..i just picked up one not too long ago...The best buy you'll come across..period.
