Well, I finally set an appointment up with my dealership to get both problems taken care of/looked at. They knew the ECU reprogram existed for the cold start rattle, but I was the first one to call about it, as well as the roof rack noise. Anyways, I figured I'd put this thread out here, so I could remember to post the results of their effort next week. :)

Yippie!!!!! No more rattle and Woooooooo on the highway. (I hope)

Bleh! Without the roof noise I wouldnt have a valid reason to turn the stereo up :D

good luck though

im getting mine looked at on monday as well.....

Cool, if you don't mind, post your results here too... I am anxious to see if they can remedy the problem completely. :)

Now I know about the "cold start rattle" issue and I'm getting ready to take mine in for an ecu tweak too, but is there something they can do about roof rack noise? I took mine off, because I figured, just like my old VW Golf w/ roof rack, there was no other way around it.... or is there?

Come on! It's a roof rack for heven sake. Try sticking anyting a cross the roofline on any veh and you will get noise. Just take it off if it bothers you. I drive a P5 every day and the noise is not that bad.

And how many peaple actually use the cross rails for anything? Maybe 1 in 100. Take them off. problem solved.

You're right, but they are fixing the noise for free, as well as the ECU reprogram, and giving me a loaner Integra to drive around in... Mine really was that bad... My rack must have been a factory freak or something.

I actually took the rack off the weekend after I bought it. It was loud enough to drown out the radio at half volume at anything over 45MPH. Only when I was driving into a headwind, but with a 50 mile round trip commute everyday, it was horrible....You couldn't even talk with a passenger with that damn thing singing.

I am getting ready to sell the P5, and I figured someone wouldn't want a car that sounded like a diesel when cold, and that whistled like a damn train above 45MPH. Oh well, I prefer the look with it off, but I figured it would be nice for someone who bought it after me to have it quiet.

A link was given to this site a while back, just look for roof rack noise on there...It'll give you the TSB number and all.

i took mine into the dealer today for the clutch chatter problem and a couple miner issues. will keep you guys posted on what the results are and how there customer service was...

well so far its 4pm eastern time where i am and called my dad to see what they've said. he told me that he had to call them when they said they would call in 2 hrs after they got the car which was at 10 am this morning. so far customer service very poor, if your going to say 2 hrs the customer expects 2 hrs not to wait till they decide to get off there ass and call..

Alright, I dropped the car off this morning and drove off in my 2001 Acura Integra 4 door rental.... I guess I will know if the re-program worked tomorrow...

Well, I got my car back, and the cold start rattle is gone!

They followed the TSB that I posted the link too earlier, and now no more noise... They ordered the new front crossmember for the roof rack, and I figured I would go and pick that up sometime next week or so...

It is really nice now to crank my car, and not have it sound like a deisel for the first 5 minutes of driving..

I was going to post my invoice, but all it said was "Correction of cold start noise per customer request, see attached TSB."

da' NOISE

Hey,

well I called my dealer who I have not seen in a good while. When Melissa, my service writer picked up, she was like...."Damn, im glad you finally called, I could not remember your last name to tell you Mazda found a fix for the noise"....So anyway, mine goes in on Wednesday 3/12. Wish me luck....Glad to hear yours is fixed. Must be REAL nice!!

thanks i'll have to print this out and take it to the dealer, they'll try to say i have no clue what im talking about. When really its them who have no clue about the MP5

is everyone experiencing this problem? i know i'm not? is it constant or a sporadic noise? thanks!

It happened everytime I cranked my car if the car was cool...

If I had driven already that day, and the temp gauge was showing anything at all, it was usually ok...

Keep in mind, the noise doesn't hurt anything at all, it's just an annoyance... Good luck!

Would anyone who has had the dealership do the roof rack "noise mod" post a list of exactly what was changed/added and with part numbers, if possible, Plleeease!

Did it do much for the noise?

Thanks,

Don

I'm supposed to pick my new front crossmember up next week, hopefully they'll have something useful on the invoice. I drove a newer P5 with the "revised" front lip on the front roof rack crossmember, and I didn't hear any wind noise at all. I tried going about 90 on the hwy and nary a peep. Hopefully the new crossbar will have the same effect on mine. I'll let you know what they say... :)

Will
