cold air intake

im thinking of getting a cold air intake over the short ram....im just scared of hydrolock....how hard/easy would it be to hydrolock? or am i dumb and have nothing to worry about?

well you'd have to submerge the intake completely in the water, or get really unlucky and have a massive amount of water shot up the tube(maybe if you decided to wash the inside of the intake with a hose while the engine was running)...just be warey of puddles

honestly I doubt if you'll have any hugely noticeable difference on our cars between a CAI and SRI. If we had turbo'ed cars or at least engines pushing over 200hp, then you'd probably notice a clear difference. By the #'s perhaps a few horses difference. I don't think it merits the extra cost of getting a new intake and the chances you take of hydrolock. But that's my opinion!

well right now i have the stock system cut off at the box with a k&n drop in.....so i might feel the difference but your saying theres only like 1 or 2 hp between sri and cai?

i can spend around 30 to 35 shipped for SRI or about 50 to 55 shipped for CAI....im thinking the 20 extra bucks is worth it...

dont worry about hydrolocking, but dont go over deep puddles on purpose. when i first had my installed, it rained really hard like 2 days later, and i was so being extremely caution. i had to drive like 35 miles on the highway, and i was freakin out. so when i couldn't take it anymore i stopped at a gas station and popped the hood, and the intake was completely dry. another time i actually hit a puddle because i was on the phone not paying attention, so i stopped at the gas station to see if it was wet. it was like barely wet. so the filter gets like barely wet sometimes, but it's not enough to do damage. go with whatever one u like. i picked the typhoon because im going to convert it in the winter time to see if there is a difference in power. im thinking it will accellerate more high end for the cai and more low end for the sri. i know the sri is louder than the cai.

I'm DIYing a semi cia. I don't want the filter to be down the hole, but rather, just above it, and I want to fab a box that fits around it (have to relocate overflow bottle) and that way it would insulate it from the warmer engine air, and allow cold air to be drawn in, but not in a direct path of water.

yeah, you don't have to worry about hydrolock. Only way it'll happen is if you totally submerge it (like somebody mentioned). I run my CAI year-round in Toronto (through slush and snow in the winters) and I haven't had any problems thus far.

You could also go with the K&N Typhoon CAI which will convert to a SRI in the winter if you're really worried.

I have run a CAI on the MSP for over one year now with no ill effects.

My old car also had a CAI, and it sat much, much lower than on the MSP...also no ill effects.

IIRC SCC did a test on the AEM bypass valve awhile ago, and said it worked...they also said that you need to submerge the filter before it will suck up water. How ofter do you think the filter would be dipped in water?

Edit - forget the SCC test, physics says it too.

Even if there is only a little exposed filter (above water level) the motor is lazy and will want to suck up the easier materil (air is much lighter than water).

i was very unlucky... turning right on a street with a puddle... power was out so i couldn't tell the puddle was deep at all and BUHH! no more stock msp engine for me! just be careful... it DOES happen

i drove my car in alot or rain and hit a few puddles and i got the Injen CAI but so far no hydrolock. i had it in for over a year. so if you want a cai i say go for it you should be fine.
