Chopped tires

I have Pirelli's on my car and the front tires are starting too get chopped on the inside and outside edge of both tires. I was just wondering if anyone else has come across this problem?

I keep it at 38psi all round but bumped it up to 42psi 2 weeks ago to try and help the issue.

It sounds like your air pressure is good, if not too high. This might have something to do with the traction control. I'd put money on it.

my pzeroneros started shredding once the weather got warm, the compounds in all tires are different and get sticky or hard at diff temps and humidities. i run Kuhmos in the summer and pirellis in the winter.

Remember, there are two different PZero Nero compounds; a summer, and the all-season.

I've been running the AS ones for a long time now and haven't had any issues with the tires being chopped. I would like to see pictures to better identify what you're talking about.

i have the pzeronero all weather AAA tread, and they started wearing real quick as soon as it went past 80degrees, all over the 4 tires/1 formed a bubble, so i replaced them with Kuhmo Ultra High Summer Performance SPTs, plenty sticky, have great water handling for this monsoon season, and are as cheap as hell. I know a bubble is a defect, but to me it just means i ripped it on a hot day and the all weathers couldnt take it. also remember i just had an alignment before summer hit, so that would be ruled out.

I had an alignment done about 6 months ago also but noticed this problem.

Although, when my front tires started chopping I rotated them to the rear a couple of months ago. Now the good tires up front are starting to do the same thing.

I would think the bubble was a defective tire. Mine have been run in just about every condition imaginable and still look solid. With 17k on the AS tires, they still have over 50% tread left as well.

Again, to the OP, please take a picture to better help figure this situation out and put things to rest.

I've had this....

I've had this issue once, and it was a bad wheel bearing allowing just enough play to cause the cupping on the inside, and outside. it was bad enough to make the tire wear goofy, and not bad enough to cause any noise or pull to the side.

In my experience cupping like this is due to something like that or a bad ball joint. I've been running the Pirellis without any issue, and on my 6th set.

My tires are damn near bald....any suggestions for a good tire that won't break the bank on a 07 3 hatch?

All-season: Kumho ASX, great in rain and snow
Summer tire: Hankook Ventus V12 evo, they're ninja-level quiet and grip really well

Start a new thread next time!

I've had this issue with Pirelli tires on both my old '04 Mazda3s and on my newer 08 MS3GT (Pzero A/S). I never had the problem with either of the OEM tires, but both cars developed a chopping/cupping on the inner/outer tread blocks. The best way to describe the problem is to rub your hand around the tire in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions. In one direction, the tread feels perfectly smooth, but in the other direction the tread feels choppy, where the edge of your hand hits the treadblock lightly due to one edge of the tread being raised slightly higher than the other. The noise gets pretty bad, whether at low speed or highway, and I've had the cars checked out with no issues uncovered in the suspension by Dobbs, Plaza Tire, or the Mazda dealers.

I researched this issue heavily, and I've seen motorcyclists describe the issue as occurring due to heavy braking, where the braking causes the edge of the tread blocks to wear on one side more than the other, but I don't brake harder than anyone else, and I rotate every time I change the oil. I do mostly highway driving, so I suppose I do harder braking than I do acceleration (no wheel spins from start, ever). This issue has driven me crazy, and I have a similar issue on my BMW 335xi with both the OEM Bridgestone RFT and non-RFT replacement tires (Nexus 3000s).

The interesting thing is that neither OEM Mazda tires did this, and I put 30000mi on the 2004 Mazda3s....(shrug)

In summary, I'm thinking the harder tire compounds are more susceptible to this, and I'd recommend staying away from the Pirelli unless you favor long-wear over noise. The Pirelli's have 60% tread life remaining after almost 26000 miles....crazy.
