Cargo Carrier Storage

In answer to the question about storage of the rack: my solution was from the garage ceiling.

Wow

Wow, I just checked on this thread, and could hardly believe more than 5,300 people have looked at it. Would love to see if any of the 5,300 may have mounted a cargo carrier, and would love to compare notes, and especially photographs - especially better ideas, and improvements on the original thread.

Here's a three and a half year update on this system. It has functioned absolutely perfectly. I did loose power one time, because my trailer lights had shorted, and I didn't know it until I hooked the carrier up the next time. I chased it down to the fuse, and it was a 30 second fix. I love the new CX 5 and this combination would be a necessity with that vehicle, or the CX 7.

Last year I was hauling a load that completely covered the tag on the deck lid. Rather than use the pre-drilled holes in the chrome strip, I elected to purchase a metal tag mount, turn it upside down and mount a $!.98 license plate lamp on it. Works great and it only took one splice into the tail lamp wire. I must say the finish on this Rolla unit has been stellar. This is an old thread to bring back, but from the number of viewers, it must have created some interest.

Bumped forward as explained in the thread: New to Mazda. Hard to believe 8000 people have looked at this, but here it is.

5 Year Update!

IMGP5897.webpIMGP5899.webpIMGP5900.webpAmazingly enough, here is a 5 year followup on this project. First, I was very happy when I looked back at the original photos of the CX, and compared the shots then and now. The finish has really held up well, as has the vehicle in general. If one reads through this thread, he'll find I was torn between a top loader, and this Rola rack and bag combination. In short, fuel savings over a top-loader, and accessibility to cargo contents on the road were the tie breaker. I am happy to say were I making this same decision today, I would do exactly the same thing. I cannot over emphasize the value of the 7" riser, which gets the bag and rack up out of the way of exhaust, and rocks and debris. It also makes contents accessibility much easier. In the photo with the lift gate open, you see two kennels, but what is harder to see is the full size recliner behind it, along with various bags, sacks, and a great deal of etc.. (!) In the cargo bag are two vacuums - on their way to college age grand kids - and a ton of hanging clothes a certain person (not the driver) bought on sale at Dillards "extra 40% off sales, and a lot of etc's.. (!!) With the load distributed to the Rola, I was able to see out of the top half of the rear window. The lighting kit has held up fine - in fact the "fire truck red" LED turn signals are brighter than the CX. With the bag in place it is necessary to move the tag to the carrier. I'm not selling these things, but they really do help distribute the load. I'm sure everyone has heard of the really tough rains we had in Texas and Oklahoma in the past couple of weeks, and I am happy to report that the waterproof bag earned it's keep on this trip. Not a drop in the bag. It is an Australian product designed for the Outback - I don't think we'll hurt it running up and down I-35!
