Buying P5 in Canada

Good day,

I've been looking at potentially buying a vehicle next year, and narrowed down my choice to P5 (if everything else fails, I may try something else... but since this is a P5 forum I won't risk mentioning the alternatives and being potentially flamed :D

Question for all the folks in Ontario (or elsewhere if you can help as well) is should I get a new P5 ('02 or '03?) or rather opt for more affordable used P5 from a dealer with warranty? If so, where to go in Toronto area? What kind of pricing we are talking about here? I probably should spend more time sifting through Consumer Reports site too. :)

Any and all help will be much appreciated. Feel free to respond here or to my lisior@hotmail dot com.

Thanks a bunch!

Hello,

Im from Markham. I got a brand new P5 in April and I still love it. I dont regret buying brand new because I feel like Im her daddy. Im been with her all her life. But if you dont think of a car as your loved one like me. I would suggest used. Like they say "The second you drive a car off the lot it looses value". You might just get a car just as good and save your self $3000 to $5000 (these are guesses, I have not car shopped so I dont know the prices of used P5s).

Good luck and let us know. And if you want, post your other car picks. Several people have done this and have not got flamed. The opinions might be a little bios towards the P5, but some opinions will be very valid. ;)

Hi Todd,

Thank you for the reponse. My jaw just drops a little, when I go to Mazda Canada website and price the 2003 P5 plus moonroof plus AC plus warranty 84 MONTHS / 160,000 KM and get grand total after freight and all PST/GST of $28,014.00 - Jesus Murphy! Hence the idea of getting it used...

2003 Proteg5 ES
Your Total MSRP : $21,985.00
Freight & PDE : $925.00
Mazda Added Protection : $1,450.00
PST : $1,948.80
GST : $1,705.20
Purchase Total : $28,014.00

I will have to keep on looking for a used one - the idea of losing the money as you drive off the dealer's lot is not terribly appealing...

Are you replacing your current vehicle with this one? Because trade-ins are always an option. I traded in a '94 F-150 and chopped more than 25% off the price of the car. I could've perhaps gotten an extra $1K if I sold it privately, but then there's the hassle of advertising, waiting for calls, haggling with people who want it for nothing, etc.

Gotta love that PST, eh? An extra $2K? Ugh... I'm glad I live in Alberta!

Unfortunately, I don't have a vehicle right now I could trade in. When I will be doing the looking aroud part, I will certainly keep me eyes open for used ones at the dealerships... although I don't know whether there are really any used P5's out there now. Car seems to be too new for that. What would be a difference between '02 and '03 version? The dealer might lower the price for '02 on his lot just to get rid of the old model, but I don't know what the difference between the models is to know whether it would be a good idea or not.

2003=better cup holders
2003=differant rims
2003=head lights housing are not chromed but black
2003=has tweeters
2003=option for sport aoutomatic tranny
2003=comes with a differant blue color that 2002 did not have
2003=clear side markers (lights on the side of the car near the front)

I think thats about it. All in all, if your saving some cash, go with 2002. You might even like the 2002 better (alot of people dont like the black head lights casing, but then alot of people do like it).

I just got my brand new 2002 P5 at the beginning of November with:

AC
Power Moonroof
Hood Wind defector
Moonroof Wind deflector
Sill and bumper protectors
Electrochromatic Mirror with compass and outside temp :D
3M paint protector
Final Coat exterior and interior treatment
Roof Racks

for 23,000 with tax freight etc...
Then again, I am in Alberta so my tax is much lower than yours(yippy)

I can deal without side markers and tweeters and different rims for a savings of 5 or 6 grand!

A savings of 5 or 6 grand :eek: . I would not even give it a second thought. I would for sure go for the 2002.

Of course you can save a lot up front if you pass on the
'Mazda Added Protection : $1,450.00'

I never considered the extended warranty for a minute. You have done enough research to know that you are buying a quality product. Any manufacturing defects should show up well within the standard warranty periods. If you take care of your car, you will likely not need the extended warranty (not to the tune of $1450 anyways) ... it's a lot of money to spend up front for 'insurance'.

I agree 100% with everything you said (yes)

As to where to buy in Toronto area, I just drove by Markham Mazda, they have a sh*t load of P5s on their lot... must be at least 20 of them. I suspect they are mostly 2003s by now.... but even on a 2003, you should be able to negotiate for around $1000 off list price, when they have that many ready to roll....

I got mine from Markham Mazda. 2002, they gave me nothing off. They said if I didnt take yellow I could have had about $800 off. They threw in a bug deflector and the cargo mat though. But all and all, I do like Markham Mazda. I have had no problems with them.

This is all very educational... thanks guys! And what is the deal with the better cupholder anyway? LOL

Its funny but its true. The 2002 has very shallow cup holders. Alot of people have had problems with them and spilling drinks. I bought a cup holder designed for crappy cup holders. You put it in the exsisting crappy holder and it is bigger and better. Its only $10 at wall-mart.

I bought my wife's P5 in March at Markham Mazda. Now, they weren't a pushover, but some persistent haggling did result in $1000 off the bottom line on a Red P5 with Auto and Air. And the deal included no payments for 90 days, on 3.9% financing over 3 years. If they have a lot of cars on the lot (like now) , they are motivated to sell....

Thanks Frank, I would want to pay about half in cash and finance the rest. Might get a better rate at the bank though, so a car loan might not be a bad idea. I'd go with standard, but would want AC and sunroof :) And knowing dealer's invoice price will certainly help, too. Consumer Reports site will come in handy, as well as a membership in APA :D

Those cup holders were changed in 2002.5 models :D
My cup holders arent shallow like the first ones that came out.
:cool:
