The brakes on my 5 seem to not work as well as they used to. Plus they squeal whenever I'm backing up, so it's going in fairly soon (we've been driving my other car lately, the wife and I carpool) Anyway has anyone had to shell out for a brake job yet, how much can I expect to pay for this? I see those giant rotors and get scared, the ones on my Miata were about $12 a piece. Thanks in advance.

i would check a parts store first. they are the same as rotors and pads for a 2.3 mazda3 so there should be plenty of cheap aftermarket models to resort to if price is a concern.
Just because your brakes squeal when you back up doesnt mean theyre bad. Both my 5's squeal in reverse in the morning when backing out of the driveway. One has 18k one has 32k on it. Both of my mazda3's did it (04 S HB and 05 3i sedan). Just the pads or the way mazda builds them (my fords never did this and they had 4 wheel disks also).
Now if it doesnt feel like it brakes decent that is an issue. Some places offer lifetime brakes for 80 or so per axle. Rotors im guessing off the top of my head is probably 35-40 bucks each, pads are cheap, go for the good stuff or you will regret it later. If you have a good jack (not a mini one or the one in your trunk) and some jack stands or even a good pile of 2x4's do it yourself. You will feel more manly and you can forward the $ you would have spent to me so I can get some tinting.

You need to check pad thickness. You can get anti-squeel for the area of the pad that contacts the caliper. If they only squeel backing up, it is usually because the pads are "seated" in the correct spot while moving forward. Water on the rotors (ie, after a wash) or parking brake rub also cause rear movement squeeling.
I have the exact same problem plus its getting worse.
I reported the reverse squealing problem during my 16,000 Kms service. It actually started around 12,000 Kms. Its extremely loud and is the worse when reversing at very low speeds on a cold morning with the wheel turned while backing out. Service technician said that they couldn't replicate the problem.
At 20,000 Kms, I started to have a different type of squeeling, less loud and not as high of a pitch when pressing on the brake fairly hard, when traveling at very low speeds almost coming to a stop.
I just took in my 5 for the 24,000 Kms service today and stressed that the problem is now happening in both forward and reverse. This time they easily detected the problem but said that they need Mazda Canada to decide whether to fix it under warranty or not. They will let me know their decision in a week. They said the issue is possibly due to the caliper brackets and they may need to be replaced.
I'm gonna stay firm and and insist they replace or fix the problem as I think its unacceptable. My 3 previous Mustangs lasted close to 20 years and never had this type of problem before.
I was happy with Mazda prior to this issue and now that I know others are having similar issues, I think Mazda should come clean and address the problem by fixing it. I wasn't impressed how they denied there wasn't an issue the first time I reported it.
My 24,000 Kms service indicated I have 6 mm in the 2 front brakes and 8 mm in the 2 rear brake pads. Mazda said to replace them at 2 mm. So they know the brake pads are not the problem.
I'll give a follow up in a few weeks.

Our rear brakes make a loud noise in reverse when backing up the first time. This usually only happens in winter when the car has been out, the brakes get salty and the rotors rust. Then after the surface rust is scrubbed off backing out of the driveway the noise is gone.

I figured and it doesn't really bother me. If it was that way all the time though I'd have a problem.
Has anyone observed the squealing in reverse on 08'? Mine doesn't do it at all and I'm quite happy about the braking performance (well, all my previous cars are Honda's and they all lacked in braking department).
Maybe it will happen when it gets cold? or Mazda has actually fixed it in 08' model?

Have you looked at your rotors and calipers?
Is there a lip on the rotors? Anything look rusty?

Hi, here's a quick update on my situation :
Mazda surprising called me 2 weeks after my 24,000 Kms service and told me that Mazda Canada approved the repair and that my caliper brackets arrived.
I had my 2 caliper brackets replaced today at no charge. So far so good, no high pitch squealing when breaking. I'll have to see if its a permanent or temporary fix since the original problem didn't start until 8,000 to 10,000 Kms.
Service tech said that they have done the same caliper bracket replacement on about 5 other Mazdas. Split in the middle with half saying it fixed the problem, and the other half saying they still have the squealing. Hope I am on the lucky half.
If anyone in Canada needs to know the caliper bracket part #, it is C256-33-281.
To answer the previous posters question : There is no rust that I can see and no raised lip.
