Brake dust issues

Is anyone else having issues with excessive (well it seems that way to me) brake dust on their front brakes?

I am a big believer in engine braking, so I stay off of the brakes as much as I can to help conserve them. Still, even after cleaning the rims, they are dirty with brake dust in just a few days.

Anyone else experiencing this or is this normal for these cars?

Wax the wheels. It will slightly minimize the amount of brake dust that sticks, but will also make cleaning them off so much easier.

I appreciate the advice. So I take it you are experiencing the same issue?

I have brake dust, but don't worry about it from a performance stand point. It is very common when running aggressive pads. Pain in the butt to clean as you note. Good suggestion to wax!

Yeah...I have never owned one, but I have seen several at work at the rims (when they obviously haven't cleaned them in a while) always look dark.

The Mz3 is the same way.
Last wash removed a rather thick deposit.

I think Mazda went cheap on the rotors & pads, but considering the rest of the car, it's something I can live with...

that and newer pads = more brake dust (not like its going to lessen by a huge amount but they will get better with more miles on them).

but yes, wiping the wheels down with a specific alloy wheel cleaner and then waxing the wheels helps make it a simpler wipedown job the next time you wash the car.

Exactly what I was going to say. Not a day goes by where at least half the BMWs I see don't have have solid black wheels from brake dust.

just a note i've used EBC greens before and they were alot better for brake dust then most ive tried.

And brake parts are alot cheaper then tranny parts so i stomp on my brakes instead :P

yeah I think so too... the stock MSP pads didn't ever give that sort of issue

The brake dust on our MS3's is normal. Like many have already said, aggressive pads produce more dust. My last few factory turbo'd cars did the same thing. No worries...

My '01 Ford Escape had more of a problem with brake dust than my MS3 does. I was always tempted to put ceramics on but never did.
The MS3's wheels are much harder to clean than the Escape's wheels are.
(leaving to go wax wheels)

Couldn't agree more. Cheaper and easier to replace rotors and pads than have your tranny serviced/replaced.

The EBC Greens are awesome pads! I have used them on a couple of my cars. I think what some are failing to realize is that when you step into a super performing car that brakes as well as ours does, don't expect to get 50,000 miles of dustless braking out of it before your due for a brake job. However, if you would like to reduce the brake dust that most semi-metallic pads cause and stop better all in one package, look into the EBC Green Stuff pads or Red Stuff pads if your really hard on your brakes. They are made of different materials to reduce brake dust but they certainly do not sacrifice brakeing ability. If I recall, the Red Stuff Ceramic pads have allot less dust then the Green Stuff and are a better choice for our car because of weight and horsepower. Check out there Website and make your choice.

One added note, if you just purchased your MS3 and think your getting excessive brake dust your car will produce excessive dust initially while the brakes a bedding in.
