BOV use on Speed6, safe???

First off, just want to say you guys got a good thing going here, as for the info I have found on this car is in great abundance...I purchased my car about month ago and already have been bitten by the Mod Bug...My last car was a GTP, so I'm somewhat familiar with forced induction...Added smaller pulleys, CAI, headers, the usual list...but this is my first turbo car...and I'm loving it...not to ramble on any further, I'll get to my question...I just installed a HKS BOV setup for VTA...I ordered a CAI along with it but the BOV came first, so I installed it...Did notice a difference as it did take up some of the lag...and what a sick sound it makes...but problem is, car is rough when shifting(assuming from CPU adding fuel for the air I'm dumping) and backfires on low RPM shifts...after reading some of the other post, the MAF is to blame...is this VTA going to cause long term damage or just create unwanted sideaffects such as poor gas milage, fouled plugs, ect...?...advise is wanted, so let me have it...

1. Good purchase and good job getting away from the Pontiac.
2. Were did you get the kit?
3. Is it a recurk valve or not?
4. Do you run 93 octane?
5. The rough shifts are not from the BOV.
6. IMO no it will not cause long term damage the car already runs pig rich at low rpm.

1. Thanks, but I had lots of fun with that car...
2. CP-E along with their CAI, but haven't arived yet...
3. Both. I set it for VTA...
4. Always...
5. I'm figuring not all from, clutch let-off is high on this car, but right after I installed BOV, it seems to, how do you describe it, hick-up, not a smooth transition, maybe its in my head...LOL...
6. But the back firing did happen right after install...

Dumb question though...Will the CAI help with the extra fuel issue as it will be bringing in more air, or will the MAF just meter that much movement?...Maybe a Re-flash of CPU to correct this issue or just add a fuel/air managment...
Anyways, thanks for the input...

As for your rough shifts consider; 1) where you shift in relation to wher the engine falls on its face and 2) the engine mount. Start with the basics/easy culprits.
I have Greddy BOV, not recirculating. Sounds cool and maybe I gained a few more RPMs before the engine loses it's composure at higher RPM's but I have not noticed any difference in normal 3k to 4k shifts. I do feel the mounts are weak as hell and contribute to a "jerk" when shifting in general.

As for the poor shifting...i made that clutch adjustment you guys talked about in other posts...solved my problem...I went 2 turns and she feels great...i tried three at first, but it seems like your slipping the clutch...theres no grab point...and i just dont want to get in the habit of riding the clutch all the time by being lazy...so i bumped it back up to 2 turns...still has that grab, but not as bad...it gives me some room to learn to drive the car...and you guys are right, 1-2 shifts alot smoother...

Ok it sounds like the lack of air is your problem and when you install the CAI it should solve a lot of the issues. But the back fire is from the increase in flow through the system. Without burning all the gas.

Since were on the topic of BOV's, So far I love my car and it was a great purchase, I have exhaust(custom), intake(AEM) and a BOV(HKS) installed. I took it in to the dealership to get an oil chance and my tire fixed (nail in tire.) I get a call the following day from the dealer saying, We are voiding you're warranty because of the BOV, if anything happens to the turbo or engine we wont cover it... Any comments on that? I know they will blame it on the BOV no matter what but is there any obvious possible problems?? Thanks for the help fellas. I was thinking of leaving it on and if anything occurs just reinstalling the factory one.

Just replace the factory unit if there is a problem and your good.

Plus learn to change your own oil and then this would not be an issue. LOL

Well, ran into a small snag the other day...seems the O-ring they give you with the HKS BOV kit is a tad on the thick side....as I found out, when you use the snap-ring to hold the BOV in place, it does not seat all the way, causing the whole unit to seperate...luckly, I was in town and was able to pull over and find everything still accounted for(O-ring and snap ring)...so at work, I grabbed a different size, same diameter just less gauge(almost 0.020 difference)...i fit it into place and it still seals fine and plus, gives me enough room for the snap ring to seat properly within the housing groove...basically, the one they give you was to big and when attaching BOV into adapter, the base of BOV was covering the seat, so the snap ring had nowhere to go, but rest on the inner part of adapter...When putting it together it does fit tight, but the ring must work its way loose after awhile...everything is good now...has anyone else run into this issue??...other than that, this product is great...instructions were done right, so the mildest mechanic can install...

The O-ring that comes with the BOV is not to thick you just have to make sure you lock the c-clip into the groove. It will go you just have to press the the c-clip down with something(press hard) after you get it started in the adaptor.

I did realize that the first time...I noticed it as I installed the snap ring and i did use a small punch to get it to seat...all while pressing BOV down against the adapter, hoping to get it to seat...I'm sure if i wanted to spend most of the day working on this maybe i would of got lucky and and it would of seated, but using a smaller gauge O-ring worked alot better...And i checked to make sure it still had a good seal and that the clip seated properly...took me all of 30 seconds to get this together this time...I'm sure some of you guys got lucky with the original O-ring...just thought I share my experience...

UPDATE:::

Well,. I been running my MS6 for about a month now with the CAI and BOV...And to make a long story short,. I ditched the BOV...from day one was having problems with it...Ran it in VTA, found out the MSP does not like that, so I changed it to Recirc...a little better...no more hard shifts and backfires...but it seemed to lack power along the powerband...car just did not pull like it did...i checked everything and found that the vacuum hose for BOV keeps getting holes from it rubbing on hood...tried moving it around, did not really do anything...and that "turkey" you guys call it was not going away...so i decided to replace it with the stock one and HOLY COW...i got my car back...now running with only a CAI,. the MSP has woken up...no more turkey sounds,. a nice psss is all you hear, and pulls hard thru the RPMs... I should of read more up on the BOV for these cars, cause, it doesn't need one...in my opinion that is...save your money and purchase something that will enhance your car,. downpipe, cat-back...just thought I share my experience on this issue...

yeah but you can only hear it spool when the windows are down and cant even hear the blow off when you shift. But thanks for the info cuz i was like 95% ready to get one, now im back at square one. I really want that agressive sound.

Does the CAI do anything for the turbo sounds??

Yes, it helps you hear the turbo spooling, and the blowoff valve gets louder, nice and suttle i like it, but most people want a sound cars in a 50 ft radius can hear.

I personally dont like attention so i kept the factory on. The hks sounds awesome, but 6 months of listening to tweety bird gets old.

Thanks for the Info and you did a good job mixing it up trying to make your car run right. I'm glad you're enjoying driving your car.

Yeah, me too! with 100% ready to get one from cp-e
Now I'm just going to get a Mazdaspeed CAI

I'm getting the Mazdaspeed CAI installed by the dealership on the 24th, I'll let you know how it goes.
I know, I know, I can save a few bucks by buying it somewhere else and installing it myself but I don't want any whining from Mazda if I get warranty work done in the future. I have installed CAI's on my two previous trucks but I don't want to take any chances with a turbo.

I put my mazdaspeed intake on and went in for an oil change and they said as long that it is mazdaspeed, then the car is still under full warranty. But I guess that also depends on the dealership also. On the mazdaspeed warranty form it says that the product has to be approved by your dealer first. I didnt care though. If they wanted to b****, I would just change it back to stock every time I needed to take it to the dealership.

Crazyspeed, how do you like the CAI from Mazdaspeed, do you notice a difference in HP?? Is that your only upgrade to the car?

Well I have the Mazdaspeed intake and the HKS bov, if you call that an upgrade. With the intake, personally, it seemed to be a little more powerful in the higher RPM's(4000-5800). I just changed the bov last night to VTA, it sounds soooo much better tha when it on recirc. I have read that VTA could cause minor issues, but I have not seen any of them. I am waiting for CP-E's upgrade to come out for my major upgrade. I talked to Jordan via e-mail and he said that they should hopefully have it out before this summer.

Great, because that's what this car really needs is more power above 4000 RPM's! It actually seems weird to me that the car doesn't pull as hard after the 4000 mark? The boost seems to kick in REAL STRONG at around 2500 and really fizzles out quickly after 4000 RPM's. It kind of annoys me that is the case because I seem to be shifting more often to try to keep the revs in the power band. It is a nice kick in the a@# if you keep it in the power band but I think it would be more driveable if that band was wider. My two cents anyway.
Thanks for the info and I will update how the CAI install goes after the 24th.
