Boost Control?

Any recommendations? Thinking about buying something but didn't know if some were better than others. Thanks.

Depending on your ultimate goals, I'd say save up and get an EM (Cobb AP or CP-e SB). If I'm not mistaken, those can control boost in addition to all the other tuning features.

What mods do you have first of all?

Most people use the Cobb AP. User friendly and you can have a company pro tune your car easily. In 2nd place would be the CPE standback but thats generally for more advanced tuners. Hypertech has a new EMS out. There is a thread in here about it that you can read.

Seems like people running aftermarket turbos with better external wastegate setups utilize boost controllers. From my understanding the stock wastegate isn't the best at keeping boost within the limits you set. And regardless a tune can do that AND much more.

Right now my MS3 is in the shop (car accident) :( and wno't have it for another 3 weekss! But I have MS CIA only. As soon as I have it back I will be putting lowering springs and a DP on it.

I appreciate the advise. I am fairly new at this.

Before you worrry about boost control, I'd recommend more bolt ons. Finish the intake (turbo inlet and boost tubes perhaps, maybe even upgrade the TMIC), upgraded bpv/bov, get a boost gauge if you don't already have one, etc. There are so many things you could do before going the route of tuning, and messing with the boost. Just my .02 cents.

Indeed. Until you're ready to upgrade the turbo & wastegate, there's really little need for a boost controller on this car. LOTS of supporting mods needed first.

that helps out alot. any tips on things I should look at doing before others or just whatever tickles my fancy?

Really comes down to you. Some people advise certain things before others. Depends on your goals.

My advice is to start simple and work your way up.

Good, cheap, easy mods to start with are as follows: Test pipe, rear motor mount, turbo inlet pipe, bpv, short shifter / shifter bushings.

Then you can add "bigger" mods like a TMIC or FMIC. Then a tune.

The downpipe is best saved for later imo.

But if all your after is power . . . then downpipe+intercooler+intake+tune is where its at.

Good thread you should look at is by tunersteve. Its stickied in one of the mazdaspeed 6 sections entitled begginer mods or something like that.

I know the majority of MS3 owners would never do this to their car but I've had this setup on my car for 20k hitting WOT quite often and have had no problems.
I installed the TS boost controller and mounted it below my steering column, took out the boost spike ball and spring. Now if you up the boost without having a Cobb AP you will get fuel cut, instead of getting an AP I just unplugged the MAF sensor, set my TS BC to 20 psi and have been enjoying a major major increase in performance. I have a catless DP with the diode fix, just a K&N filter in the stock air box that has had the intake hole enlarged. I am going to be taking it to the drag strip this year so we'll see what time she'll put down. I know a lot of you will scream how could I do this to my speed but I've had no problems with it. I don't have a way to monitor my LTFTs but my A/F has been stayed normal even under a 20psi pull it stays in the 11s... A couple weeks ago I had to plug the MAF sensor and put it back to stock boost to get my Safety/Emissions done, after going from stock settings back it is a HUGE difference in performance, but like I said 20k with this same setup and no problems thus far...
