Blown Transmission

a fast one
So, I was diriving to work this moring, and I shifted into 3rd, I heard a crunch, and the only gears I am left with are 3rd and 4th. (1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse) do not work. I leave the car in neutral and let out the clutch and the car dies. If anyone has any imput let me know. I am at 42,000 mi and 2 years, so I assume I am still under warantty. I have all schedueld matanances and no performance parts next to a new shift knob, a carbon fiber hood, steel braided brake lines and cross drilled rotors. Do you think this will be covered under warranty? Do you think my whole transmission needs to be replaced or just parts of it. Like I said 3rd and 4th work. Please let me know what you think I should do ASAP. Thanks.

Yeah it was common on some older proteges...and it sucks, still scares the s*** out of me...I am over my warranty by now...but it basically requires a whole new gear set because of chunks and crap in everything...

but anyway, this may sound stupid...but before you take to the dealership, put your stock shift knob on...It may not be necessary, but it just leaves a window for them to delay your repairs...its easy to change back, and could save a lot of legal crap...but other than that, yeah it should be covered without a problem...

I had bad shift forks in third, pretty much lost the use of that.
And yeah, it seems to be more and more common on '02s. Should not be a problem, mine was fixed without question under warranty, they were aware of the flaw. '03s dont seem to have this problem.

Its a 2003 Mazdaspeed

There is no more info. This is the first I ever heard of it on a MSP. I also doubt that its a broken shift fork (more hope). Probably put the shift knob on wrong, put too much stress on the shift linkage and tweaked it. Over time this wore out the shift forks and this is where you are today.

My tranny went in the same manor, except it was 4th that went, was left with 3rd, 2nd and 1st...by the time i got off the highway, everything but 1st gear was gone. Sounded like bolts in a blender. Was covered under warrenty, took over a month, and they changed my dif to the new p.o.s.

anyway you possibly have the part numbers for the MSP shift forks? might say on your invoice from warraunty work.

Thanks :)

Recieved a call yesterday, and Mazda is going to replace the trans on their tab, not mine.

That is great news! I hope mine never goes.....my mods far exceed the warranty.
