blown speed

Its about whp/tq numbers. But try to run 250whp all day, and its only a matter of time or luck.

I was pushing around that for a very long time: FMIC,P&P head,3" exhuast,FCD,4" intake,MBC set to 14 PSI.

I know my engine should have popped, infact I was counting on it,but in the end of that motor,it ended up getting killed by water half way up my doors.

What exactly does detonation sound like? I've heard a slight "pinging" sound

PInging leads to detonation. In a boosted engine a slight ping will eventually turn into detonation faster if running higher boost. So, pinging @ 10psi might crack pistons while @ 14psi will break a stock rod or melt a piston. It all depends on fuel octane and tunning.

Well, I don't know if the "pinging" I hear is the actual pinging that leads to detonation. Like I said, I'm at stock boost with only a motor mount and shifter bushings.

I've heard a slight "pinging" sound (it's pretty quiet; I can only hear it when the windows are up) after I installed my AWR front motor mount and my kartboy bushings, and I don't know if that's my engine, my new mount not tight enough, my heat-shield rattling, or one of my vacuum hoses leaking. I have no other mods besides those ^.

Most people have come to the conclusion that det sounds like marbles hitting the floor. Occasionally, it has also been a "knock". Like when an old beater drives by you and it sounds like a knocking on your front door.

Your pinging could be from all of those things. I, myself, have had a ping/tapping noise (which I attribute to the heat shield and where the midpipe bolts to the downpipe). And even a few times a crackling noise (like rice krispies in milk). Every time I've heard either noise I've immediately depressed the clutch and prayed it was one of the things listed, and not the engine readying to tell me "f$#$ off, I'm done with your abuse".

thats true and all,but in all reality we know that our engines were not ment to be boosted the past 6 or 7 psi without sacrificing reliability.

This reminds me of Shawshank Redemtion where the prisoners say that they are all innocent. Whenever we blow an engine, all we had was stock boost and a motor mount.

"Honestly Mr. Mazda Technician, I didn't modify my car!" LMAO!!!!

how fast were you going when you blew your motor in 4th gear?

there is a higher load on the engine when you are going slow and in a higher gear. so driving at open throttle, the engine load in 1st gear climbing to redline is easier on the engine than 4th gear going the same speed at open throttle. think of it like riding a bicycle. you don't pedal up a mountain on certain gears, cuz you have to pedal super hard and you're going to be really tired. you choose the gears that are easiest to ride up the mountain. alot less stress and alot less work to do. And the FCD leaning things out didn't help either!

So yeah, now you know why you blew up your engine. Don't blame it on the engine, blame it on the driver.

Well I am at 86k miles now with 12-13PSI daily for 84k miles and I have seen 15-16PSI on more occassions than I can remember but under very specific circumstances.
I have not installed a FCD and I will not until this thing is paid for. Then I will go with an MPI, extra injectors and get the whole MPI Nick setup so I won't need an FCD.
I think that the fuel cut saved my motor on many occassions when it went over 15PSI when I was not expected it to do so. So basically I don't **** with the cut.
The wastegate acutuator is fubared now so it has sporatic nutso boost but it has been through hell so I am not really pissed about. I am just waiting to do the whole Nick conversion.
Sorry to hear yours blew.

if youre at stock boost and all, i wouldnt worry too much. SAY NO TO FCD! get a Split Second PSC1-020 AFC. that will keep your A/F ratios in line (for not too much $) for up to 10 PSI unless u tune it for higher boost. detonation sounds like marbles hitting the floor or rocks in a tin can. Maybe it`s a slow valve and ur cam is tapping it? or the little men in ur head are playing tricks on u!?

i just thought of the best thing to do... if u have any warranty left just take it to the dealer, they`ll look at it for free.

You don't really pick your nose do you? LOL!!! Some of your pics you guys have kills me. I need to change my red stapler...

Easy killer... let's get his response first:) But I think you are probably right. Just from listening to eveyone that has blown their engines, it seems that 4th and 5th gear is the killers. And you bicycle analogy nailed it.

I always take it easy in those gears unless I see a winged Civic with a 6" exhaust then I hit the BOV for s**** and giggles.

Yeah but on the bycicle you will not break your legs...or pedals

Our pedals and legs are stronger than the Mazda connecting rods. LMAO!!!!

hehehehehehe, I always make sure their windows are open. And you have to time it right so it blows off right as you pass them....heheheh

Start with rods, rings and low compression pistons. THAT`S a very very good start...

19000 miles @10 psi = swiss cheese block, for me anyway. You definately need supporting mods to turn up the boost. in my opinion, the FCD is not one of them.

FMIC, MPI ems, 3" exhaust, I would start with these next time.

with just a smic and 3 inch catless would you pop your motor? i mean it does raise the boost about 1.5.....i am worried about getting on it or even feathering the gas in fifth

no,it shouldn't,but some of these have popped stock.

Are there any aftermarket plug wires for the MAZDASPEED Protege? I haven`t seen any.
