Blown headgasket (azian6er)

why/how is everyone blowing their HGs if they are good for 30psi? detonation?
Overheating. I blew mine too. My radiator hose came off while I was driving and all of the fluid came out causing it to overheat. The head warped because of the high heat. I got it machined now its good. A lot of work involved getting the head off though.

so honestly, how long is the process to get the head off? i have heard 5 hours, but some say more then that.

i am suspecting a weekend job, but is this correct?

Also, how much and where should i take the head to get resurfaced?

It cost me $35 to get it resurfaced and $40 to get it pressure tested. Just take it to a local machine shop. As far as how long, it depends on what other mods you have in the way. Also the tools you have. Looks like you have a lot of mods. Of course you know that everthing that is connected to the block must come off. Intake manifold, exhaust manifold. I didn't have to take the turbo manifold completely out/off. I took the radiator out and pulled the manifold away from the block. You already know the cams, sprokets, timing belt/cover, crank pulley, #3 engine mount, misc. wires/connectoers need to be unplugged. There is also a water neck on the right side of the block that needs to come off. It is connected to the top radiator hose. It also might be a good time to replace your water pump since you'll have the car broken down that far. Depends on how many miles you got. I got 80,000. Also this is what I used>> http://protege5.ugly.net That came in handy. Follow that and you will be good. Good luck. If you need any more advice let me know. I'm on here every once in a while :)

Oh yeah. I say at least 3 hours. To get it off.

you have to take off the intake manifold to get the head off? I didnt hink that was going to be necessary.

I know the turbo mani needed to come off and the timing belt cover and the belt, but i didnt think the intake mani need to come off.

Also it is really necessary to take the cams out to lift up the head? I didnt think that was necessary either.

Oh well, any more info is greatly appreciated.

Actually you don't have to take the intake manifold off. Just disconnect the connectors. There is a mount though at the bottom of the manifold that needs to come off. Oh yes. The cams got to come off. The head bolts are under the cams. The bolts are allen head type 10mm. You know like this>>>

From what I am discovering, it is very easy to overheat our boosted cars in the summer. I did a run this morning, and the temps outside was like 69 F. My coolant temp read 176-180 F at 60 MPH. When it is like 90 F + outside, my coolant temps can easily go up to 210F before my fans take the temps back down to 199 F. The radiator fan comes on at 207 F, and cuts off when the temp falls below 200 F. Before I wired my A/C fan to my radiator fan ( For details CLICK HERE!!! my coolant temps would get up to like 234 F if I sat long enough in traffic, and that was with the one radiator fan running only. OUR CARS ARE HOT WHEN BOOSTED!!!!

If you are talking about the plastic timing belt cover, then it is held on by a few 10mm screws, and the UDP!!! I never did get that cover off my old engine because I didn't have an airtool with good enough torque to get at the UDP.

good thing it doesnt get THAT hot here :D although i like to turn on both fans for cooling before shut down :)

Sorry for the loss of a hg. Some encouraging news is I have replaced the headgasket on a 1.8 protege in less than 2.5hrs.

bllzoomzoom, what does the dealer quote for a headgasket job (hours wise?)
