Since we have recirulating blow off valves i was wondering whats the best aftermarket one to get?

I don't know much about the different kinds... I know they have different sounds and the main purpose but thats it

Your best bet is the Turbo XS Racing Bypass Valve, it is the recirculating type. Same concept as a traditional Blow-off valve but recirculates to the manifold.

haha why the hell do u want a BOV, theres a perfectly good one there already. save ur money

I know I sound like a complete moron and newbie saying this, but...I had no freaking idea that the msp came with a BOV in it already. This sounds even dumber, but...how come when I drive it, it doesnt make the infamous "pssshhhh" sound. Im just assuming that its a weak oem Bov. Ive seen a post or two where the guys who own MSP's with K&N air filters have said that it really enhances the sound of your turbo and Bov. But do these guys have the oem bov, or have they gone aftermarket? Anyone who has this air filter , your help is greatly appreciated.
p.s. sorry for the lame ass dumb question, but im trying 2 decide on my first mod, which ironically enough was going to be a Bov:D

If you are only starting off on mods then a BOV is not really worth your time. With nothing else added you will not get noticeable improvements.

I doubt that the OEM BOV is not capable of staying "shut" under the small PSI the MPS push. Now later down the road if you plan on pushing more PSI or even upgrading the turbocharger, then a upgraded BOV would be needed.

However as a starter mod you'll only really get a neat noise, thats about it.

Yes and no, well actually more yes. The main purpose of a BOV is to prevent turbo compressor surge. Failure to vent the pressure out of the intake can cause the compressor wheels on the turbo to bend over time. So yes to have a heathly turbo you need a BOV. But upgrading it is only needed if you plan on running more boost, or really race the car. Everyday use will only warrent the OEM BOV.

I know that all turbo cars need a bov to help preserve the life of the turbo, but I read somewhere that the oem ones they usually(it didnt say they all came with one) come with are very innefecient, and that you are better off with an aftermarket one. REMillers, thanks for your input. Even though im pretty sure I should upgrade the boost on my car to fully take advantage of the bov, a big part of me definately just wants to hear that sound...lol(naughty) However, if this is my first upgrade, are there any negative effects it could have on my msp?

It all varies course the OEM will not be as "great" as a aftermarket, and over time will probably start leaking. Its one of those if you want to spend the money then go ahead, but dont expect any performance gains with it alone. There are other parts you can buy that will give you better results, till either you run more boost or the car gets older and the OEM starts to fail.

There shouldnt be any negative aspects, expect it may bleed to much pressure. But most are tuneable so you can adjust that.

To expand on what timrock101 said...

BOVs are a type of pressure release valve, the other type is a Bypass Valve (VW 1.8T use these),which releases the air into the intake. BOVs, on the other hand, release the air into the atmosphere.
With a Bypass Valve you won't get the hiss you crave (am I right here?).

Go for a better intercooler or CAI.

I bought a BOV not for performance gains but just to be loud and obnoxious. I'm buying a turbo car and I want it to be known. =)

Saying a mod is a waste of time because it doesn't increase performance is stupid. Body kits? Racing pedals? Carbon fiber vavle cover? No, they're not essential, but they complete the package. That's not a waste of time to me.

Not saying its a waste of time, but if you are seaking performance gains then yes for a first mod it is.

Even body kits from a performance standpoint can be a waste of time depending on the weight difference it adds.

There are many different avenues to follow in moding a car if all depends on what approach you take.

With the addition of a K&N RU-3580 Cone Filter, you will achieve some gain. No question! Yes; you will certainly hear the BOV, and the Turbo spooling much better. Your throttle response is increased as well. I love this little $40.00 addition.

It Leaks after you boost up.
Greddy type S, HKS SS, HKS Racing all have the option to recirculate.

probably why i bought my HKS super sequential.no leaking whatsoever with the way its designed with its pull instead or push design:D

TwistedJeckle, so you have an hks super sequential bov? How is the sound? Do you have any other mods along with the bov, and how much did you pay and where did you order it from if you dont mind my asking. on top of that, how easy or hard was it to install?? sorry for so many questions, but i got excited all of a sudden!

i'll let you know in a couple of weeks once i get my intercooler and intake pipes back from Spool-Turbo as hard pipes. they're going to mount an HKS flange for me which is needed in order to mount the bov. an additional $35-50 just for that little bugger. the HKS is suppose to be one of the best in the industry due to its design. now if only those bastards would make a turbo timer harness. anyway. there's another thread that i started about it with a couple pictures of the actual peice and somebody got a link to a site where you can listen to a whole bunch of different BOV's. check that thread as well if you'd like a little more info.

you guys are killing me with your ignorance the stock blow off valve is the same valve that is on the third gen rx-7's and is good for enough boost to destroy the protege engine. I like the blow off sound it makes cause if you have ever heard it on a 3rd gen it has the same distinct flutter. so now you know, I do own a mazdaspeed protege and love it also took it to the track and ran a 15.1 pretty impressive for my no cost mods
