Be Careful about HP Racing Headers...read...

Here is a link to a guy who put them on his Prelude...HUGE POWER LOSS...dunno about the new 2001 Protege Header...want to buy it so bad...but until I see some real gains from them...this guy has REAL dyno showing huge mid range power loss...I am going to wait...just copy and paste...

Just trying to help all you Protege Bros out there...

Huh. That freakin sucks. I've heard good things. My girlfriend has them on her 97 Civic and I can tell you first hand that there was a suprisingly good power gain. Not the usual "placebo" type gain if you know what I mean. I'll try to convince her to bring her car to the dyno this summer and find out exactly. I'll be dynoing my car this summer as well when I get all the mods listed below. Hopefully sooner than later. Peace out!

I'm not sure if you notcied, but that is an entirely different application from the Protege. A lot of Hondas have power loss in the mid range with a header. Mainly due to people not knowing how to tune a VTEC cars. Any Honda guys should know that you can't just lower the VTEC, if you do then you have to change quite a few other things. If he noticed a dip in torque, it was due to the fact that he set the VTEC Cross over too low, which he points out. If he really wants to see gains, he'd have to throw in some aftermarket cams, set the VTEC a bit higher then, change the cam advance the cam gear on the intake side and retard the exhaust cam a bit. Anyway, Honda's aren't exactly known for they're torque producing capability. I did a bit of tuning on my Civic's.....before I traded them in for my MP3.

Should I just get it and hope?

I mean $200 isn't that much dough, but I also worry about the Check Engine Light. I assume that the O2 Sensor near the precat will freak.
Does anybody know if this header removes the Main Cat too? Because I want to keep that one...

it does get rid of the cat. but there is a trick out there, it involves puting a couple resitors in the o2 sensor and it will fix the lit. go to www.zx2racing.com in the mod section and then go to MIL it shows you how to do it.

someone on this board has already tried the resistor thing and it didn't work. I forget who. The person with the bosal header.

I cleaned out my cat and then tried the resistor and capacitor thing and it didn't work. I'm going to try to switch around the wires and see if that works. I post the results.

I don't see .4HP and a few lbs of TQ as a "huge" power loss as you describe it...maybe I'm reading it wrong. Anyway, kudos for the heads up.

Also note on his page...

"*the HP Racing headers changed the way my engine worked. Thus, the known optimal setting for Vtec XOVER of 4200-4400rpm was changed to 5000rpm. If i set Vtec down lower i would get a huge dip in power. "

Yeah, I read that too. Anyone who knows how to tune a VTEC Honda should know that in order to extract more power once you've modded it. You would most likely leave the VTEC activation point where it's at. The only time you'd need to change it is if you have aftermarket cams installed, then you'd activate the VTEC higher in the revband, like I stated earlier. I'm sure our Protege's would gain a few pounds of torque assuming we had some well designed 4-2-1 headers. 4-2-1 are basically the only headers that will add torque in the mid range while adding top end HP.
