I've had a number of high mileage cars, and there's one sure sign of balljoint failure, and unfortunately it's one you're not likely to notice until you remove the tire or turn the wheel all the way over so you can see the whole tire surface.
When the balljoint fails, the tire leans out at the bottom, and the titre surface within a couple inches of the inside sidewall wearrs off. The rest of the tire may be fine. Of course, by the time you see this, the tires are shot, so it's best to check for play when you can.
This normally happens on cars with 175k to 200k miles. Considering all of the problems I see on this list, I have to think the protege5 suspension is just under-designed. It looks to have the same components used on my Miata, a much lighter car. So early replacement, like at 75k, is a good idea. I'll be replacing my 80k cars lower control arms for this reason, along with the tires. ouch.
