Aww crap....I bought another crappy engine...

My first engine took a dump at 120k miles...not sure why yet, but I believe it spun a crank bearing. I had terrible lifter noise, so I decided to find a used engine so I could possibly keep myself from getting in too deep financially......
I did find one...with 66k miles...I checked it over as best as I could, oil all that kind of stuff, and everything looked good....until I took it home...and pulled the oil pan off..
Black Tar man...I think I could sell that product in the bottom as bearing grease! I am stuck with it, because it was a cheap purchase, and a 'as is', situation.

Any suggestions as to whether I should break this engine down too. Should i try some desludging procedures? I keep getting deeper and deeper into this car, and my intent was to simply get it back on the road, for as cheap as possible.

This sucks!

sucks to hear man. i dont really know what to tell u about the sludge... humm its kinda hard when u dont see it but usually sludge isnt a good sign !

Yeah, sludge is def bad...I just figured I would exhaust anyone who may have some answers on how to 'possibly' deal with it. I will probably go ahead and build up the other engine for turbo, but I would like to at least get the car back on the road since my jeep is a totally gas guzzler being I have it geared for rockcrawling.

All Mazda peeps...I welcome your info!
Thanks Peter5

I'd clean it up, have a machine shop make sure it's not ruined, check everything else out, rebuild it. You can get stock stuff for pretty cheap, stock rods/pistons for the 2.0L aren't that much. I'd send a message to Ken at PG to see if he has a set.. unless you want to go forged..

theres some stuff i think u put in ur oil and let the motor run for about 20min at hi rpm to heat and clean the oil passages. ill get some mote info on that bud.

And here I was thinking that the deal I got wasn't that great - after hearing your hard luck story I'm considering myself lucky..... I got mine with 70,000 for $700.00 from a wrecking yard and it came with a 180 day, unlimited miles warranty. Sure hope yours ends up working for you somehow....

you can actually use tranny fluid use a new or old oil filter fill it up with 4 quarts let it sit and rum at idle for a while.trans fluid has alot more detergents in it so it will clean alot of the sludge up.

But I'm assuming he hasn't installed it, and that would be a hell of a hassle to get it installed and it still be bad or need rebuilt despite the things that can be done to it at idle, etc.

I would be cautious with this, I have heard of that being done also but you could end up doing more damage if you don't know what you're doing.

EDIT: Nevermind, check this thread out. Turns out it actually helps if you haven't been taking care of your motor so well or do extended changes. It has also commonly been used as a good "flush" substance since the early 50's.

I'll probably add half a quart or so before I do my next oil change and see if this can help quiet down my valves and the "knocking" sounding cold startups.

Thanks guys..I do recall the tranny fluid procedure, but I was wondering of newer methods..I am still in frustration mode...but I appreciate all comments guys. Keep it coming. When I have a little more time, I may see what I can clean by hand...Has anyone any probs with their oil pumps? This is where my greatest concern lies...

Thanks again fellas.

I think that someone was referring to Seafoam earlier. Isn't this the sort of situation that Sf is supposed to help? Of course you would have to have the engine running.

in 96 during my auto tech training the old teacher said it'll do an engine wonders to put half a quart of ATF in at an oil change. I've done it ever since and never had an engine go bad. Also if you mix ATF with white lithium grease (to a pink cream) its a hellofa engine assembly lube.

Yeah but... Whoever had this motor did NOT love his car. Can you sell it and buy another motor?
