AT & Check Engine Light On

2003 Protege 5 Automatic

Ok, so my girlfriend was on her way to my house from work and she said the car jerked suddenly then continued going normally. During that sudden jerk she heard a sound as if something flew and hit underneath her car (im thinking a snap/crack sound). Then the AT light came on and began flashing repeatedly while the Check Engine light was also on. Once she arrived to my house she had problems with the idle and even died out. I don't have one of those OBD2 readers, so I wanted to ask here before I borrow/buy one. Any suggestions to what could have happen? Thank you!

go get that code read at a PepBoys, Advanced Auto, etc. They do it for free. Doesn't sound good honestly

3/29/10 Update
The AT light is now off, but the Check Engine light is still on. I finally had the chance to take her car out for a drive and there seems to be no idle problem now, but there is a knock sound when I throw it in reverse and start moving. Then it would have the same knock sound when I go forward. Damn rain is pissing me off so I can get under to check. Maybe a broken mount?
