FlyinHawaiian,

I got a chance to use my 50mm 1.8 in low light and thought you might like to see the results. The pics aren't spectacular, but it was really dark and I was impressed with the speed you pick up at f1.8...

Why would you show me those? I just spent $300 on a SMIC for my car and NOW have to go out and spend another $100 on a new lens... hehe

Dude, those are amazing. I think I'll go for the 1.8 over the 1.4 just due to cost. How has the autofocus been and do you have ANY complaints about it? Be brutally honest. Like for example, the 55-250 is an awesome lens, but the autofocus is slow and kind of dumb sometimes. I'd still buy it again if I didn't have it though.

if you compare the autofocus on the 55-250 with the 50mm, you will be in shock with how fast the 50 is. that being said, if you're taking pictures of anything less than 10 feet from you, it is tricky, because if you focus and then lean the slightest in any direction and then take the picture, it's all out of focus. the DOF is ridiculous. I couldn't imagine the 1.4 that one must be nuts. Anyway, I have nothing to complain about. it takes great pictures and works flawlessly. it only gets kind of dumb in low light, but it has to be REALLY low light. Also, I got mine refurbished. it was $80.

The low light thing is Canon's downfall. The 50mm lens is good..but it's real finicky when you shoot wide open aperture. As sleeper described, it's very touchy. Just raise your ISO a bit and don't shoot lower than 2.2 or 2.8 at those distances.

don't get me wrong, I love shooting wide open on that lens, I just shoot each picture like 3 times to make double sure I get at least 1 keeper.

I think I can do 3 in 1 second with AI servo focusing...

what is stack focusing???

It's pretty popular with macro shooters. Since the DOF is so narrow in super macro shots, people take multiple pics with different focal points of the subject then they stack the subject on top of one another to create a focused image.

hm that's interesting.

well, I can see why that would be good for macro shots, but I like choosing my DOF by camera settings.
