And Yet Another Addition To The BS Turbo Club

You can add my name to the ever growing list of smoking turbos. Why the hell doesn't Mazda do something about this epic fail of a snail? Any ways, I am visiting my dealership on Monday to check if it is really the turbo. Do I have to remove my TIP and Cobb intake before I go in?

I would definitely remove the TIP. Most dealers don't fuss over an intake, but if you're gonna take out the TIP you might as well just take both out and not have to worry about it. I started to get the smoke as well at idle, but with some thicker oil, the ptp pill and changing my idle rpms no problems since. Just because you get smoke doesn't mean your turbo is ruined, just means your PCV system sucks, lol, no surprise there.

Do you know if the PCV is covered under warranty? Or the turbo for that matter? I am out of factory warranty, but I still have 3 years of Extended warranty. And I know they like to dick people over in the extended warranty.

PVC and turbo should be covered. Don't bother ******* around with a PVC fix though. Take the damn service bulletin with you and show 'em if they want to try some BS fix. You need a new turbo and nothing else will stop your smoking except that. If you have a Cobb AP then you can set your idle higher. That works for a lot of people. Some will say that that stupid PTP pill is a fix but I can't imagine why. It didn't work for one second for me.

I'm taking my car to the dealer tomorrow morning for the smoking turbo. I'll let you know how it goes.

It turns out it was indeed the turbo. But they didn't replace it. They changed my oil to 5W40. If the problem persists, then they will replace the turbo. So, here's hoping the oil change doesn't work for very long

Don't worry it won't. The latest service bulletin says that they should skip the 40w oil change and go right to replacing the turbo. Even Mazda NA admits the oil change never worked. You have to have oil change records or you might be screwed.

Still... a free full synth oil change is always nice.

my moms cx7 started smoking reaaallly bad, took a video of it, sent it in to mazda NA and she's having her turbo replaced next week

so you SHOULD get your turbo replaced under warranty

which extended?

it is not a warranty, per se, but rather an insurance plan.

step correct and leave them no excuse to say no
when they do say no, be polite, persistent and keep moving up the chain

I live in Canada so I am not sure how it works for you guys in the states. But originally, last year, I bought a brand new NA 2009 Mazda 3 (because there were no MS3's to be found). When they finally found an MS3 (9 months later) I bought it. They transferred my extended warranty that I purchased from the original Mazda, to the MS3. They are going to FULLY warranty my turbo (if the oil change doesn't work). Which means I don't pay a dime. I've already talked to the tech person and he said that they have to perform this oil change first. If that doesn't work, then it is a new turbo. Oil change records are not required...However, I do have them anyways. So either way I am good. The crappy thing about the 5W40 oil change. I just got an oil change from another place not even 2 months ago. Oh well!!!

I believe they are giving out the new revised turbo and it should not smoke again. I sure as hell hope they are anyway. I have not had confirmation of it though, just a guess really.

I got my car back from mazda yesterday. They installed a new turbo for me and it sounds sweet! I have close to 44k miles so they had to do it under powertrain warranty.

Only thing I had to provide was maintenance records.

snip..
Only thing I had to provide was maintenance records.

My MS3 was pre-loved, and did not come with maintenance records because the dealer said they contained personal info of the previous owner. I have my records of the maintenance though. I wonder what would happen if I were to be in this situation.. ?

I'd raise hell at the dealership because they couldn't give you the maintenance records until they said okay and gave you your turbo.

I'm lucky, my '08 (manufactured in December '07) has only smoked due to my catless DP coupled with a recirc hose leak, unmetered air and lower backpressure = smoke :( definitely scared me. Has since been fixed, and a catch can was installed for protective measures. Hasn't smoked since.
