Might be a dumb question, but how many miles do you usually drive before changing your air filter? I have an AEM short ram and just wanted to know when I should replace it.

If it is an AEM filter it should just need cleaning unless you really hammered it. Do you have the older oiled style or new dryflow? The dryflows are guaranteed for the life of your vehicle.

AEM Recommends:
Service Intervals
Service your AEM filter element with AEM's Filter Cleaning System at least every 50,000 miles to maintain optimum performance. We recommend that AEM filter elements be serviced every 30.000 miles on off-road and high-performance street applications. If you live in a region with extremely fine dust (arid or desert climates for example), follow the recommended schedule for off-road and high-performance vehicles. Always inspect your filter element whenever you change your oil.

what do you wash it with? on the website is says you can use any mild all-purpose cleaner (for the dryflow).

somewhat unrelated

I was just wondering how much the AEM SRI affected sound levels and gas mileage. I hear its better on gas than a CAI. I'm just getting started here.

From what I've been reading around, and even a dyno run on a new 3, the big difference is how hard it is to get at the filter to clean it. As to gains, your butt-dyno won't be able to tell a difference, and, the biggest thing that's going to affect your gas mileage is attached to the bottom of your right leg.
