? about Window Tint in New Jersey

Hi Guys,

I need your opinion...

Santa hooked me up with $100 gift certificate at the local window tiniting shop here in South Jersey.

The thing is, tint is not allowed on the drivers and passenger side front windows. It wont pass inspection, and cops can pull you over and harass you and give you tickets. The back windows and rear windshield can all get done.

What do you guys think? I want to get it done, cause it was a major deal for my wife to come through with such a cool gift. She gets jealous of the car, and the attention and care I give it. But now, I am not sure if I am going to like not ALL of the windows done....

What would you guys do, what do you think?

I know this guy in NJ. He has a yellow mp3, with tint on all 4 windows, plus the back. Just get 33% tint on the sides and you'll be golden.

*knock on wood*

Personally I prefer the even look of having all the windows the same. Here in Florida the limits are 30% in front and 20% all around. I just got 20% on all the windows. I'll take my chances.:p

man I love MN, we dont need to inspect anything anymore :) Oh and unless you actually use it, the p5 looks much cooler without the roofrack on.

DOH!!!!!

I hope there are no 7+ yr olds reading this forum....I would hate to have that on my conscience!

do all the windows the same.... just dont go too dark... looks WAY better than not doing the front and limo onthe back... or at least put the lightest one on the front two then a little darker on the back.. then a little darker on the small back windows.... that should be ok....
i myself went 35% all around... 25% on the back window.... looks great imop

I agree with everyone else. Get the same shade on all the windows, but don't go too dark. Don't know much about how NJ's laws work, but I've got 20% tint all around and live in MD and have had no problems. The law here is 35%, so I just went one shade darker. Honestly, as long as you aren't driving around like an idiot and have 5% limo all around, you should be good for a while. Oh yeah, and if you get pulled over, just roll down your front two windows and turn on the dome light. Most officers appriciate this, so they can see you clearly when they pull you over and will probably save you from a tint ticket.

On a funnier note, heres a story about tint. The only time I've ever had an issue with tint, was when I traveled into VA with my old RX7. The cop told me that anything darker than 50% tint is illegal in VA even if you are out of state. The cop wrote me a ticket and I took it to court and made him look like an idiot. I showed the judge the VA law from the book, and showed him that my car wasn't even registered in VA, and all fines including court costs were dropped. The judge told the officer to brush up on his laws....lol

Craig, hey what's up man. I'm from South Jersey as well- I think I've seen you drive by a couple of times back when I had my black Tiburon. I think I saw you up near the Berlin Circle. Anyway I'm from Williamstown but my gf lives in Vorhees. I think your the closest member to me geographically.

Don't listen to Kooldino, lol, I'm from South Jersey as well and am well aquainted with the aggravation of window tint. If you do 5% all around your asking for trouble. And even if you do lighter on the front side windows you'll still be harrassed. This is comming from someone that tried to tink my previous car 3 times before giving in. If anything go with a really light, 35% or lighter....all around. Whatever you do, don't go the two tone route. (ie Tint in the rear and clear up front!) Looks horrible...but thats just my 2 cents. :)

Hahahaha...

Hey lazer whats up? Well....I'm sitting here laughing...Cause I just got back from the Tint Shop (AutoDogz in Audobon). Anyway, after talking to the guy at the shop, I went with exactly what you said to stay away from....

I know, I know...the whole car would look unreal all done up, and hence my jealousy for all other 45 states that legally allow the front windows tinted...But after listening to him and hearing all his stories, I didn't want the hassle. He was honest and told me its not really worth it, he sees it all the time how people get harassed (by harassed he means $76 ticket, $35 cour costs). They told me if I ever went back to get the front windows done, it would only be $25 per side....

So yeah, I wish it was all around, but I think it looks a lot better now than it did before.

I wrote Jim Saxton our Senator asking him to do something about the tint law, and he told me it wasnt his juristiction, to call this person...whatever, it was worth a shot.

So until it changes, I'll just stick with this...I'll post a pic or two later on..

I bought my car fully tinted in Florida and then moved to Jersey with it. I went for months without having the car inspected as I tried to find a place I could convince or bribe to let me keep the tints. Nobody would do it so I had the tint removed. Getting the car through future inspections is something to keep in mind if you tint the fronts. In addition, I was coming back at about 12 P.M. from a MX-6 meet in Seaside the day after the tint was removed and I was hassled by a trooper. He pulled me over for tints, made me roll up the window a bit to show him there was none. He was truly shocked to find none... for some reason my windows look tinted at night. Seriously though, there is 0 tolerance for tints so I vote against doing the fronts but by all means do the rest. I can't be sure from the picture but it looks as though you do not have the tint strip running across the top of the windshield. If you don't have it, get it. It's completely legal and really helps to block the haze and glare during the day.

what is the legal limit in texas? i want tint on my my yellow p5 and it would suck to not have the it on the diver and passenger windows.. i wish i had gotten a black or silver p5 sometimes.. i still like yellow but its just the mood im in at the time i guess.. color changin p5 ;) ....

hmm.... according to that site,
Texas

Visor.........5"
Front doors..........35%

Rear doors.........35%

Back window...Any

I have the receipt for mine in the glovebox (on the car before I bought it) and I think it says 15%.. The two front windows are a tad lighter than the rest of the car if you look closely. Since I have a receipt, I'm guessing it's legal, in TX the installer gets a $10,000 fine if they get caught installing illegal tint. I tried to on my other car. Only way they'll do it is cash, underneath the table, w/ no record, receipt or warranty...
