I have a stock 1991 Protege DX and am thinking about swapping the engine..i have a SOHC right now and the only other engine i can find is a DOHC.....anyone have some suggestions on what i should swap in there???
u can look into the BPT GTX motor or the GTR (more rare) both are turbo'd engines that come overseas.
i read a lot of people keep the DX block and swap in a DOHC BP head and custom turbo that setup. if i remember, the DX block has lower compression? correct me if im wrong anyone
if you wanna keep it NA, a KL-ZE motor will work too. its a mx6 v6 motor that puts about about 200HP when mated up with the correct ECU. theres a writeup on that on the clubprotege forums
the 2.0 will require more work to fit
I have sen people pull the 2.0 in 3rd gen pro in favor of a gtx or gtr motor.
But out of the swaps 323 said, the bp na is the easiest of them!
The v6 will require a little more time! but also needs a bit more parts!
A bp form a ford escort will work also to swap in!
gtx and gtr are factory japanesse motors
fromt he overseas mazda 323 awd.
these are turbo motors and you will need a few parts. if you can get a front clip, (your best bet to get all the parts) everythig will go in except the tranny (there a standard protege dohc 1.8 tranny will come in hand) and the gtx is rated at 175 hp and the gtr (more rare) wil start around 210 hp all at flywheel. get them to run stock if you have all the parts. then go to intakes. and there are a few floating around!
a good site for swap stuff is
corksport.com to get help.
there are a few website that carry alot fo the older mazdas. one actually hase the how-to for doing a turbo motor swap
c l u b p r o t e g e . c o m take out the spaces is one
i m a z d a . c o m is another! little bit more old schools that deal with the older platforms
i got one more question about my swap...... I want to convert it to all wheel drive and the gtx motor i've found comes with an all wheel drive tranny......so other than the tranny what other parts would i need to make it all whell drive
I'm not worried about the work but does anyone know what parts I would need or where to find information on the all wheel drive protege so i can compare the two
