5th Gear Swap from NSN - Anyone Tried This?

would it be wrong to want something taller than that? like 2750rpm @ 70mph or would that be to low? in fact whats the lowest a 240whp protege could go rpm wise at 70 without the feeling like your hill climbing?

2800 or maybe even a hair lower might not be bad. Only problem is we just simply can't get any other ratios yet. I'm hoping to get my butt in gear ( no pun intended) and pull the gears out of one of my spare transmissions and get them sent out to be mapped and quoted. But haven't gotten there yet.

Is there a gear swap available for a 2002 P5 Auto?

I know that my car stock has a 4th gear ratio of 0.725:1, a final drive ratio of 3.904:1, & a tire height of 23.26 (with 205/45/16 tires). As my car is, at 80mph I have a cruising RPM of 3271.

If someone where to make a taller 4th gear for my car (0.10:1 taller for a drive ratio of 0.625:1), and with all other variables the same, my P5 would now have a cruising speed of 2820 for a drop in 451 RPM's without any loss in drivability otherwise.

I'll take one!!!

Just for conversation's sake let's take the above example one step further:

The latest rage for all the Mustang Cobra guys is to swap their T56 6-Speed transmission for one that is Viper spec, with a rear ratio of 0.50:1.

Suppose someone did that with our cars it would drop the cruising engine speed of 3271 all the way down to 2256 for a drop in 1015 RPM's.
Amazing!

I know, I know, our cars don't have 400lb-ft of torque but still, I'd be willing to downshift for a few hills for a reduction of highway cruising speed of a little over 1000 RPM's.(rockon)

I'm just throwing this out there, what do you guys think?

I'm really thinking about doing this gear swap. Can someone who has it report on their experience with it. What RPMs are you getting and how much of a mileage boost are you getting?

Isn't there a gear from another vehicle using this tranny with a better ratio? How much do gears cost from Mazda anyway? I want this mod.

that's exactly what this is, a gear from another vehicle that drops in to our cars. It's priced out based on what it'd cost you to get it from the dealer and we include all the seals you need to replace and the locknuts which add up but are necessary. We can discount off the price on our website, so if you are serious about it talk to me I can get them in less than week anytime you want.. but the ratio we got is the best we can get from any known application (we searched for a long time) and that's about it!

It took us a lot of hours of research and some risky testing to get that information... so I'm not willing to disclose it. That defeats all the work we did to have something "unique"

Absolutely, but can you tell us the ratio?

I don't remember the exact ratio, but it is a 5% drop as tested and claimed. We had hoped to find one closer to 7-8% drop, but 5% is what we found. It's enough to yield a cruising rpm down around 3100 and most people pick up 1-2 highway mpg.

Well I just ordered cause I want all my parts home when I get home so all I have to do is build my car. This is something I was looknig forward too. Does it come with instructions if not did you get the instructions put together. If so so could you link me to them.
