2nd gear shift

i'm just curious if there was ever a solution found to the 1st-2nd gear shift annoyance...it never really bothered me before but now it's just becoming really difficult and annoying when doing the shift at high revs...if you don't know, i'm talking to about why shifting from 1st to 2nd seems to be harder then any other gear change under hard acceleration...i did a search and found a lot of threads on 2nd-3rd, and i've never had a problem with that...thanks all

That makes me feel *MUCH* better that someone else is having this problem. I thought the syncro was shot for 2nd gear. Very curious to see if there is a solution to this, as it's been a PITA for me too (thought)

same here. I've got a 02.5 and 1st-2nd used to feel 'solid' now its more 'overly difficult'... (dunno)

sorry guys I've never had this problem. I DO however have a problem with my third gear popping out all the time now...WTF?

that sounds like a synchro to me...

I've got the same issue. Only happens when things are cold, though. Once the engine and the transmission warm up it's fine. Haven't noticed it as much now that it's getting warmer outside. I figure I'd just ask the dealership next time I'm over there. Of course they'll probably just say there's no known problem.

well guys....UNFORTUNATELY we didn't buy race cars....and the tranny wasn't built for it......we just have the best damn looking/handling econobox on the market.....Just slow down a bit and you won't jam the gears.....as for the popping out of gear.....yep...that is a syncro going out.

i had this problem starting a week after i bought it. i have heard that the 626 with the same trans/engine combo had firmer synchros and did not have this problem.

Starting in 2nd can wear out the clutch very quickly if you're not careful. I usually don't start in 2nd unless there's snow/ice on the ground, when starting in 1st just gives wheelspin.

I got into the habit with my '97 Eclipse...89,XXX miles and no problems whatsoever.

However, I agree it is probably not the best way to treat the clutch, but it is the best way to treat laziness :D

change the tranney fiuid using 1qt atf finish the fill with 80/90 gear oil in colder climits use more atf redline 75 works as well but its $$$$$

Um, 1st to 2nd shift grinds all the time time now. Like 2-3 times a day. That's after the Redline Sinthetic MT-90 went in. I am seriously concedering puttinf my car back to stock and going to the dealer. Another problem is that i am afraid the dealer is gonna be like sorry can't duplicate the problem, and i am gonna waste all the time i spent putting the mods in and out. God damn it. This annoys me a lot...

1st to 2nd = pain
2nd to 3rd = pain
4th to 5th = pain....

I can't shift to reverse on most of the time... and sometimes I can't even shift to 1st gear...WTF...

Maybe I drive like an old woman but I have no problem shifting 1-2 at 3500-4000 rpms. Very rarely do I need to accelerate faster than that. Then again, I bought my car to drive back and forth to work in...not to race people at stop lights.

Reverse is a trick...make sure your foot isn't on the brake and let the car roll an inch or two (may require a quick flutter of 1st gear) and it should pop right in.

You won't feel much difficulty when shifting 1-2 at 3500-4000rpm. But you feel it at higher rpm. The higher rpm it is, the notchier or tougher it feels to get the gear in quick. Not that you can't get it in at all, but like half a second slower, as if something is blocking it. In order words, it still shifts fine, but you can't shift fast.

Its been a known problem for a lot of Pros for a while, but don't think there is really a solution for it. Using Redline or Redline Shockproof Superlight help ease the problem, but it'll still be there. Brought it to the dealer once about it, the mechanic said it shifts fine with him. Yeah. Sure. -_-

well if im trying to launch or something, sometimes i get hyped up and miss 2nd and grind it like s***. it makes me so worried :(...but usually, its no problem...its just i shift real fast and don't realized it never went all the way in...
