2nd gear shift

Well, I switched to Pennzoil Syncromesh ($4.99/qt) tonight and my problem is pretty much gone. I didn't drive enough to proclaim it fixed, but I'll surely know by tomorrow night. Syncromesh is designed to a GM/Chrysler spec, but people on here swear by it. Now I know that Redline 75W90 NS has the same problems that Mobil 1 has in our trannies -- it's too thin. Probably be fine for Alaska, but during the summer and normal winters it thins out too much when warm.

I'll update tomorrow night if everything goes ok.

Well, I think this sucker is cured! I didn't even come close to grinding second gear this morning. I can usually shift with just two fingers now...can't beleve how smooth it is. We'll see how it holds up long term.

I've read/heard good stuff about the Synchromesh fluid. How many quarts did you use? I'm gonna pick some up....

D - 3 quarts...the tranny only uses 2.83, so I guesstimated. However, I was a little worried about future warranty issues --hoping not to have any -- so I swapped it out to Redline MT-90. It shifts better with MT-90 than it did with Syncromesh or Redline 75W90 NS. Try MT-90 first - it's the proper weight for our trannies and it will flow better when it gets colder, which is why I changed mine in the first place. I can shift through all gears with two fingers now.

MT-90 ran me $8/ qt, but the $24 is worth the investment. Once you spend $19k on a car, what's $24 more!
