My cx 5 is currently at the dealership because I had a left rear brake light replaced and my car would not come out of park. The brake would not depress all the way. Car would not start…Smart brake system malfunction warning, I am being told that it is the harness. Any suggestions?

It could very well be damaged harness. Do you see any evidence of rodents especially in the cargo area?
No none, and it’s just very coincidental that it happened when my brake light was being replaced and was instructed to leave my engine running. Hoping it’s not the harness. One person suggested that it could be the “room fuse“ and is labeled as such in the fuse box. IIRC #54 in the top left-hand corner in the fuse box in front. I’m hoping for a less expensive fix than the harness. Thank you and keep those suggestions coming!

Telling us that the shop changed out the bulb, WHILE THE CAR WAS RUNNING, would have been a BIG clue.
Did they tell you why they wanted the car running while they did the work?
I'd avoid this shop in the future.

Yeh this not only confuses members who are trying to help here, but also creates duplicate answers, although the other thread title doesn’t fit your problem.
Do you know if your factory tail lights are LEDs or just standard incandescent light bulbs? Or what is the trim level of your 2018 CX-5? If your CX-5 is at a Mazda dealer to diagnose the problem, IMO you don’t tell them about your opinion on room fuse thing. Just let them do the job, and answer whatever the questions they have. Of course the Valvoline oil change place should take responsibility to fix this problem as they screwed the brake light replacement which I doubt your brake light actually needed a replacement. Had you seen the failed brake light in person? They rarely fail even if they’re traditional incandescent bulbs. They could just try to make some additional easy money from you during oil change but unfortunately screwed things up.
I don’t know the trim package details. My brake light was out. The dealer said that leaving the car on was a factor. I had a short in the brake light switch wiring and they said I had an after market alarm system that locked everything. I was not aware that I had an aftermarket alarm system, I was told that some dealers install those in the cars that they intend to sell, and they either remove them or disable them before the car leaves the lot. I am going to look at my original paperwork and see if that was disclosed to me.
They charged over 800 in labor to fix the problem plus a brake switch.
I do have my car back and it seems to be fine. I will see what Valvoline does now.

Sounds to me like you got screwed by both the dealership and Valvoline.
How much did Valvoline charge you to mess your car up?
Did you buy this car new from a dealership? If so, they should be made aware that their aftermarket alarm system is causing issues, and they should be responsible for removing this junk.

I did buy the car new from a Mazda dealership, Valvoline didn’t charge me because of this disaster…I m contacting the dealer today.
