Mazda 2 2012
This is my first post and my user name is Dunmowdan (named after a Roman settlement in Essex, UK). I live in Ottawa, Ontario and coach business and water polo.

Last week we lost the remote for the Mazda 2 and I resent a $175 fee being asked for by an after market auto parts shop. I see a lot of Fobs on line from China and Austria. If I buy a Fob ($6 - $25) on line I get a blank with it.

My questions are:

1. Is there any legal restriction to get the new blank cut using the second key that we still have?

2. Is it difficult to program the new remote to work with the car remote system?

3. How can that be done?

4. Does anyone know the reliability or trustworthiness of the foreign sellers of Fobs?

Will be very grateful for any advice..

Congratulations on your first post! Glad my instructions made sense. :D

Sorry about linking you to the CX-9 Forum...For some reason I thought you had a CX-9! Not to worry, I moved your thread to the Mazda2 Lounge.

I hope you find the info you seek and enjoy your time here on Mazdas247!

Legally speaking, I don't think there's any restrictions to getting a new key cut.

IIRC, you need 2 programmed keys in order to do a DIY programming. I don't recall the exact steps, but it involves starting the car (or turning the tumbler to acc/on) with both keys, turning the car off, and quickly replacing it with the new unprogrammed key.

It will likely be easiest to just get a new key at a Mazda dealership, and maybe talk to one of the service guys nicely, and they'll program the key for free.
