According to Sport Compact Car this month you can gain 20 hp by just opening the top of your air filter housing in your Mazdaspeed 3. Dyno proven an all.(hump)

There you go cheaper horsepower than that nothing.
Let me get this right.... So just opening the top of your air filter housing will give you more HP than a CAI on the MS3 ?
Well I guess this will kill all the MS3 CAI sales. I was going to get the CP-E CAI now I can get MORE HP for free..... sweet!
Thanks for saving me $329. (breakn)(rofl)

Sure, for the 1st 5-10 minutes of operation, you're doing better than a CAI. But have you seen how hot the engine bay gets? Pretty soon the charge temps will climb and nix or at least greatly reduce the gain. Also, nobody has said whether this is running with or without the filter. If it's with the filter, that's pretty awesome. But, what're you gonna due run around forever with a filter taped up into the top of the box? You'd have to change it a lot since it would be sucking up dirt from everywhere.

If you want more airflow and engine sound, get a CAI, it'll be worth the money.

... I dont have a MS3, the only time ive seen the air box on one of those things was when I was installing the first ever CAI on a MS3, so I may be wrong. You should get a CAI, its a b**** to install lol.

Come on, your pals at Street Unit say it was a breeze to install! Wait, maybe that was RPM Store. I guess I'll find out when I get mine ....

Free 20hp

I just took that stupid snorkel off and also cut out 2 more openings BELOW the air filter (meaning air is still filtered before entering engine). I felt a huge difference! Next is a K&N filter.

Don't know if I will even spend the money on a CAI now.

Wait until summer though, then the engine bay will be a lot hotter. Might not be so bad where you are, but definitely a big issue here in TX. More power to you, if you can save the money.

I agree, it does get hot here in Chicago too in the summer, so I guess I shouldnt say I would never buy a CAI just yet.

Hunh? It's about the effect of opening up the airbox on the MS3. Maybe you clicked on the wrong link or something.

I have to ask, why the hell would someone test a car without an air filter in place? Who is going to be driving without one?

Right, it's dopey. But some might tape their filter or an aftermarket filter up into the top of the airbox and run it like that. That's the dyno we should be talking about, if someone was to do it.

I tried to help out the SU guys when they put it in but its kinda a person and a half job. Had to take out all the under side panles and the LF tire and fender well, along with some behind the bumper moding to get the filter to fit. Does it sound like a pain yet? lol

No need too, doing what u said u did plus a k&n drop in gives the same gains as a SRI. And I speak from experience. Id sell you my drop in but I gave it to my b**** neighbor, I should go steal it back.

Yeah, but one I've been through before. I had to do all that same crap when I added a Fiamm Low-Tone horn. At least this time I'll know what I'm getting into and I get a much bigger reward . . . more power!
