2.5" Exhaust to Stock Axle Back

:
13 MX-5
Has anyone ever done this? I'm about to do this and was wondering because I've got the 2.5" Apex catless j/midpipe and I put the stock cat-back on and noticed it doesn't pull as hard topend. But boy, it sure feels nice to talk to your friends on the freeway!

ive heard of people doing this, it has the same sort of sound as stock just a bit louder, but smooth tone. Are you saying 2.5" catless with no resonator to the stock axle-back? If so it'll be a little louder than you have now, but honestly i can see it being too bad. I had my vibrant 3" for almost a year, and now i just put on the Apex'i full 3" catless and both of them are quite loud but tolerable. The apexi has no resonator just straight pipes, but it actally sounds real nice, no raspiness at all and it's actually quieter under 3000 rpms. I think you'll be happy with your suggested setup.

I ran mine for a short time this way. It is very nice to have a quiet exhaust! In the end I decided to sacrafice the noise for more top end.
you could always just swap out the muffler when ever your feeling frisky. Doesnt take long.

I plan on doing the same thing but with the revised axel back portion....

Maybe you can gut it aswell, keep the stock looks but it'll be louder...

Yeah, my cars the 03.5 model but I bought a stock cat-back from an 03 since I sold mine a while back. I'm still planning on using a 4x18" round body Magnaflow muffler as a resonator.

i have a 2.5" turboback (corksport) to a stock msp axelback (oval tip). i love it. its way less restrictive than stock and i dont lose all my low end. granted i have back pressure but for my hp goals its a fine tradeoff.

Cool. That's what I was thinking too, it can't be as bad as the whole stock cat-back. How does it sound by the way? Barely louder and more agreesive then stock?

has a little more rumble, i gave my parents a ride in it and they didnt mind it, said it was quiet so its parent approved :) . noo drone at all which was key for me, i had 3" turboback and it was so droned out i hated it. the round msp axelback does drone however so it depends on what u have. i recommend the oval tip.

yea its a little smaller than the 2.5" i have, but the quiet is so worth it. it flows well also. really getting rid of everything oem up to the muffler is the most restrictive part anyhow. Your exhaust is as big as its smallest diameter but if ur just tooling around and arent goin for 300whp then itll be just fine.

i ran the 3 inch apexi catless midpipe with stock catback and its a tad louder than stock. if you went 2.5 all the way back to stock axelback, i believe it would sound just the same if not just a tad louder. so pretty much if you keep the stock muffler, its gonna be quiet

My Greddy SP2 is 2.36" and quiet as hell. No droning or buzziness at all. I drove around for a year with just 2.5" J/mid pipe with the stock exhaust. I noticed a marked improvement in top end when I added the Greddy and the noise level didn't really rise at all.

You know, its not a huge difference but deffinatley noticable. If it matters i have the stock 03 and JIC catback. The sound with stock muffler is great. Just more of a growl. The fuzz wont even look twice at you.

Well, I got it done this morning and it is barely louder then stock. I'm still using the Magnaflow muffler as a resonator. Thanks everyone. I'm more satisfied now.

Good deal man. What magnaflow did you use for the reasonator?
I'll looking to change mine out in the near future.

i did similar to mine. i got the j-pipe back to the mid pipe with a high flow cat and had a muffler welded on to the stock piping and yesterday i got the resonator removed and now have 2.5" j-pipe back exhaust and its very pleasing!
