2.3 litre engine...

I was at the Mazda dealership today and I picked up a brochure fo the new Mazda6.

In the back it lists the engine specs and it's 4 cyl makes 160hp with 155 lb/ft of torque. I'm wondering why they don't offer that in the proteges/p5s? It seems like it would be a perfect fit since everyone thinks the p5 could use some more power.

I doubt it would take away sales from the 6 considering they're marketed towards different people. Similar to how the Xterra didn't cannibalize sales of the pathfinder.

Sorry if this had been discussed before, I did a search and came up with nothing

hello Sarcazmo, and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. (stash)

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!! (stash)

the reason that engine is NOT in the current P-5...is that its not the same engine...and its not a direct swap into our cars...but who knows....it COULD be the engine in the NEXT generation of our cars....time will tell.

Also I believe the 2.3 is the Ford Duratec engine.
That engine would make our cars need a new Tranny, something Mazda didn't want to undertake until the complete redesign and the introduction of the 3.
The next Generation Mazda I4 will have atleast one turbo since Mazda was commisioned to build a bejesus of turbo engines for the entire ford fleet. Since the P5 only has a year left I don't think we will see the duratec in it.

NO, that should be the 6 cylinder. The duratec is actually a yamaha I believe. It is being said that the 4 cylinder 2.3 liter is a Mazda engine. They have some posts in the mazda 6 section.

Its supposed to be a totally new ground up design.

Variable intake valve timing, 'tubular-ish' exhaust manifold(as close as it gets for a production engine anyway), balance shaft, magnesium valve cover, forged rods, aluminum block, variable intake manifold, and more.

Should be a good motor. Can't wait to see turbo versions!

With all of that, it should be more powerful.

I think it makes about 8 more HP per liter than the FS. It's suposed to be more efficient, wide powerband and smoother too.

Time will tell.

Seems like Mazda has been chicken s*** to take a HP risk since the RX-7. The Miata and protege have both always been patheticly restrained. Even the MSP had to be tammed to aviod the Tranny issues. I think the same thing might be up with this 2.3L. Mazda want to run it a year or 2 and make sure its sound then they'll get some more pump from it. Not to mention the midsized sedan copetition aren't making much more HP with there 4 cylinder models.

I agree. They seam to be very conservative. But they also have useable wide powerbands. I think they take their limited funds and put them into wider powerbands over high peak numbers and meeting US emissions.

With the MS protege, they were probably just avoiding warranty issues. They turbocharged a motor that's not really a turbo motor(from a factory perspective anyway). They had a limited time to test and make sure its super reliable. It was more important to get the car to market quick at a reasonable price. 'Let the aftermarket take care of the speed freaks.' At the claimed HP and boost level it should be able to take a serious beating and not come back to haunt them with the 50k warranty.

The new 2.3 motor has to be capable of more with great efficiency too. Again, they probably went for wide power and emissions. They don't have Honda money, so they need to take the most efficient rout for them. Honda has the time and the cash to reap greater gains.

The turbo 2.3 in the Mazda Speed 6 is supposed to reach 280hp and tons of torque.

Where did you hear this? That would be cool with me, just make it more rare and collectable.

Well, there will be a replacement, but all Proteges disappear starting in 2004 model year. They will be replaced by the "Mazda 3". Of course, what will the Protege 5 be called? The "Mazda 3-5"?

All Proteges everywhere n the world will be redoubed the 3 wgons included from what i have heard, 2004 I believe is the last production year.
