You need to determine if its fuel, or ignition related first. As soon as the car dies, check and see if there is spark at the spark plugs. If so, then move on to the fuel system. See if there is fuel pressure. Is the fuel pump running? Once you've isolated it to the particualr system, then you can go into more detail.
If its a heat related problem, I'd go looking around the distributor pick up/module, or coil. A quick "wiggle test" of all the connectors while idling is a start, to see if you can make the problem show itself. Beyond that, you'd need a service manual, and a Volt meter to do a few tests.
