So what is involved in tapping into the oil pan? Do you drill a threaded hole and put some kind of fitting on there for oil lines?

It depends on the fitting. The one I have does not have to be threaded. It requires a 3/4 in hole to be cut/drilled in. It has a sealing washer for the outside, and a nut to fit over it.

Well you could. That probably would be the best way to make sure that atleast the oil pan is sealed.

As Linux said, there's no need to get that elaborate. Because it's so easy to remove the oil pan on a Protege, it's simple to put a well-sealed fitting in place. On other cars, you get to drill a thin aluminum pan in just the right place while it's on the car, trying to get around the AC compressor and if you go too far you hole the oil pickup. Then you tap the hole....

...but not on a Protege

You pressurize the crankcase with about 5 psi of positive pressure until you break through, then increase to 10 psi. Not more or you'll blow the seals on the engine. Also, grease the drill bit and the tap to grab the shavings.

Again, not required on a Protege.

Welding is the best way if you can have it done. On our setup we use a 2 way fitting that fits between the drilled out oil pan with o-ring type washers in between and then you tighten it making a seal. I imagine FM's is similar.
